La Raza very worried about Frist's Bill

Just saw this on Univison.com after someone posted the link on the LAIR forum.

THOUGHT YOU ALL MIGHT BE INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THE OPPOSITION IS SAYING:

Worried about the scant (time) margin established by the Republican Majority Leader of the Senate, Bill Frist, for the Judiciary Committee to detail a rough draft of immigration reform, Hispanic leaders convened by the National Board of Immigration (NIF in its Spanish Acronym) on Wednesday demanded "more time" and warned that "this regards the future of 12 million human beings".

The Committee began deliberations on the 3rd of march based on the bill HR4437 which the House of Representatives approved on the 16th of December, an iniciative which among other measures, criminalizes illegal status and punishes assistance to any undocumented person in the United States.

"We are in a critical moment", said Michelle Waslin, director of the Immigration Policy Investigation of the National Council of the Race (NCLR), the pricipal Hispanic group in the U.S. "Frist has threatened to ignore the Judiciary Committe and presented his own bill, like the Sensenbrenner Bill (HR4437), and forgot about the guest workers".

La Raza argues that the bills submitted by the ultraconservative Republican Sector recently don't include a solution for the millions of undocumented, and instead recommend police-state solutions that lead to massive deportations.

    El plan de Frist
    Frist's Plan

Frist's Plan, which would be brought to the floor of the Senate on Monday the 27th together with the recommendation of the Committee, would put emphasis on border security and would ignore the situation of the undocumented.

"We want Frist to respect the Judiciary Committee and not to use the immigration issue as a platform for Presidential candidacy", clarified Waslin.

La Raza asserted that the Frist bill was based on the Bill HR4437 which the House of Representatives already passed.

For the Reverend Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Conference of hispanic Christian Leaders of the United States, "this is the first time that the people of faith, the workers, the businessmen and the activists have united ourselves in a common cause: 12 million undocumented people."

"We have a clear voz and goal. This (the immigration debate) supercedes the work of the Senate. The decision will impact millions of families. Because of this, it is everyone's issue", accentuated the clergyman.

Inasmuch as the deadline date for sending a rough draft of the bill, Rodriguez emphasized he is "100 per cent in favor of Frist giving the Judiciary committee time to prepare a comprehensive reform".

    Exigen legalización
    They demand Legalization

    (SEIU).

For the Labor Movement, the Committee requires more time and the immigration reform should include legalization. "We are asking the Leader of the Senate to give time to the Judiciary Committee", said Eliseo Medina, vice president of the International Union of Service Employees (SEIU)

"We support the bipartisan immigration plan of the Senators McCain (AZ) and Kennedy(D-MA)", added the director. "We immigrant are not criminals, we are workers".

Medina said , in addition, that "We are sending a message to the politicians so that they don't use us as cannon fodder in political campaigns. The result of this debate is very important to the United States".

For Angelo Amador, director of the Immigration Policy of the US Chamber of Commerce, the main reason that the leader of the Senate should concede a more time to the Judiciary Committee, is to permit the detailing of a comprehensive reform "that includes all the themes that it needs to touch on".

"More than 5 per cent of the workers in the United States are undocumented", said Amador and added that "they deserve" an oppurtunity for legalization.

Amador, the same as the other directors that participated in the board, remarked that the criminalization proposal in the Bill HR4437 would cause a sever impact on the immigrant community in the United States "and also in the Commercial Sector"

    Avances en el Comité
    Advances in the Committee

As far as the reform bill that the Judiciary Committee is writing up (which is in recess until Monday), Waslin indicated that on Thursday of last week an ammendment for guest workers was included in it.

"We know that Senator Specter (Chairman of the Committee) approved part of the bi-partisan McCain-Kennedy Plan, in which undocumenteds could obtain a temporary visa after paying a fine of $1,000. After 6 years, this worker could put himself in line to receive a Green Card, but after paying another fine of $1,000", he explained.

Waslin empahsized that this inclusion was not an amnesty, but an earned legaization for every immigrant who qualified under the plan.

    Llame, marche, hable
    Call, March, Talk

At the end of the debate, the four directors convened by the NFI agreed upon the advice that "everyone" communicate with the Congressmen and demand an immigration reform just and humane.

"If the Judiciary Committee has sufficient time, they will have a good immigration reform bill", determined Waslin.

"We ask everyone that they wake up, that they write to their senators, to their representatives. We are against human trafficking, we are against insecurity, but we are in favor of the millions of human beings that are here and deserve to be heard and helped", said Rodriguez.

Medina stressed that the battle is also won in the streets. "If the pressure of the community increases, the politicians will understand that the vote of the Hispanics is important in an election. The theme of immigration is a theme of Pure Policy and not a theme purely of politics", he advised.

Yes, I also saw this article in Univision and it made me wonder. Seems they are not as sure of themselves as they appear.

By the way, great job translating!

Either that or they are deliberately putting out disinformation to whip up the crowds of illegals into a fearful frenzy!

It seems with all those supposedly smart and ballsy lawyers they have, they'd know the bills better than that, doesn't it? it looks more like disinformation meant to send the crowds crazy so MORE MOBS will be easy to raise.

HOW DO YOU THINK FRIST WILL REACT TO THEIR DEMANDING
HE GIVE SPECTER MORE TIME? I think it's going to make him mad!

WE MUST COUNTER WITH OUR OWN DEMANDS THAT THE BORDER CAN NOT WAIT ANOTHER DAY!!

EVERYONE, PLEASE GET ON THE HORN TO FRIST TOMORROW AND DEMAND BORDER SECURITY NOW!!

Also the article clearly shows they intend to get all these illegals voting - they are expecting the mobs to show the politicians that the Hispanic vote counts? How would a mob of illegals show that, unless they intend to teach them to register.

We should get on Volpac and talk about this, especially asking hard questions about whether this intends to say the voting will be compromised this election season.

    **********************************

Oh, and thank you for the compliment. It was a long piece, but I felt it was important for people to see it now when they are feeling so discouraged about the expected vote on Monday.

I still think that Frist is going to try and outmaneuver Specter and he WILL make immigration his platform to get the election sewn up. I am thinking that way even more after seeing this article. WHY IS LA RAZA SO WORRIED - ONE HAS TO ASK!!

They want illegals to call and write Congress to DEMAND legalization? So illegals have a voice in Congress, but native born, real Americans and legal immigrants, who can vote - legally that is - who have through virtually every poll and survey have said NO AMNESTY, and YES TO DEPORTATIONS, their voices don't count? What the hell is happening in this country, when criminals can demand anything, let alone amnesty for their crimes? Enough with this type of bogus government, I say: NO TAXATION WITHOUT DEPORTATION!!

La Raza has thoroughly alienated many Hispanics who love this country and don't want to be associated with those UnAmerican Traitors. Their tactics are the common BULLY tactics of the elementary schoolyard.

I am ashamec that such an organization is allowed to continue in this country - but I am horrified that they are SUPPORTED and WINED AND DINED by candidates for higher office.

These candidates need to remember the Hispanics that DON'T dance to La Raza's racist tune.
