At Least 54 Dead After Migrant Truck Crashes In Mexico

At least 54 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured when a truck full of migrants crashed in southern Mexico on Thursday, The New York Times reported.

The accident occurred when a truck carrying more than 100 people overturned, the head of the state Civil Protection Service, Luis Manuel García Moreno, told Milenio TV, the NYT reported. It is one of the deadliest accidents involving migrants in decades.
The truck contained passengers who were mostly migrants traveling from Central America, and it was moving at an “excessive” speed when it rounded a sharp curve and flipped, a witness told García, the NYT reported. The truck then crashed into a pedestrian bridge and construction close by.
“My solidarity with the victims of the traffic accident,” Rutilio Escandón, the governor of the state where the crash happened, tweeted. He noted that 105 injured people were receiving treatment as of Thursday night.
“I have given instructions to provide prompt attention and assistance to the injured,” Escandón said, the NYT reported. “Responsibility will be determined according to the law.”
Migrants attempting to enter the U.S. are often packed into vehicles for their journey and can face danger and violencealong the way, the NYT reported. The bodies of 19 people, mostly migrants, were found in a charred pickup truck in January near the U.S.-Mexico border.
“The rising migrant death toll in the region is highly alarming,” said Michele Klein-Solomon, regional director of the International Organization for Migration for Central, North America and the Carribean, the NYT reported. At least 750 migrants have been killed in Mexico while traveling north since 2014, according to the organization.
The “Remain in Mexico” program, which has been criticized by human rights groups for forcing migrants to wait in unsafe conditions in Mexico, was reinstituted by the Biden Administration last week.
“Under the Remain in Mexico program, the United States and Mexico have knowingly put thousands of asylum seekers’ lives in danger,” Ari Sawyer, a researcher for Human Rights Watch, said in a statement Thursday, the NYT reported.

55 people died and more than 100 are injured after a tractor-trailer smuggling migrants from Guatemala, Ecuador, Dominican Republic and Honduras crashed into a bridge and flipped over on Thursday.

The truck was smuggling about 250 migrants when it crashed into a bridge in southern Mexico and flipped over.
According to the Associated Press, some of the survivors fled the scene because they didn’t have proper documents in Mexico.

The truck driver also fled the scene and his whereabouts are unknown.
Wounded survivors being treated at a hospital near Tuxtla Gutierrez recounted the horrific crash to the Associated Press.

AP reported:

Those unlucky enough to be riding jammed against the fragile walls of the freight container almost certainly died, survivors said. Those in the middle of the packed group survived, cushioned by their fellow migrants as the container flipped onto the road.
“The ones who died were the ones who were up against the walls of the trailer,” said one young migrant from Guatemala, who was being treated for a broken arm at a local hospital. “Thank God, we were in the middle, but the ones on the sides, they died.”
The migrant, who did not want to give his name because he did not have proper documents in Mexico, described a gruesome scene of screaming and blood in the moments after the truck crashed into the base of a steel pedestrian bridge Thursday evening. He said about 250 migrants were on board.
First, the living had to extricate themselves from the tangled pile of dead and dying bodies.

“They fell on top of me, there were like two or three fellow migrants on top of me,” the youth said.

Mexican officials are cracking down on human smuggling with a new task force aimed at curtailing the kind of tragedy that led to 54 Central American migrants being killed in a truck crash.
Mexico, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and the US will all be part of the working group, the BBC reported.
More than 150 people were jammed into a truck’s trailer when the vehicle, which was reportedly speeding, hit a pedestrian bridge on the main road leading to the Chiapas state capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, on Thursday afternoon.
The task force will look into the crash, which is still in the initial stages of being investigated, and encourage prosecution of the smugglers involved.

Actions like these will continue to happen so long as our border is insecure.
If smugglers had a harder time, they wouldn’t be so bold to keep trying.
