Letter I received from my representative Adrian Smith:

September 21, 2011

Dear XXXXX,

Knowing of your interest im receiving updates regarding illegal immigration, I am writing to update you on recent developments.

As you may know, an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants currently reside in the United States, though the actual number may never be identified. To address this growing threat to our economic and national security, we must develop an aggressive and comprehensive solution. Because of the importance of this matter, I am once again a proud cosponsor of the No Social Security for Illegal Immigrants Act(H.R. 787).

Current law does not allow illegal immigrants to receive Social Security. However, work history - even work done as an illegal alien - can count toward Social Security benefits if an individual later becomes a legal resident. H.R. 787 would correct this problem by excluding payroll taxes remitted as an illegal alien from being counted toward future benefits. This legislation would help to deter illegal behavior and reinforce our country's laws.

Currently H.R. 787 has been referred to the Committee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security. Rest assured, as a member of this subcommittee as well as the Immigration Reform caucus, I will continue working with my colleagues to oppose amnesty and eliminate incentives which promote illegal immigration.

Adrian Smith
