    Question for Californians

I need some quick info from you guys on the west coast.
I received a strange email today from a puu@islandmotorsports.com with a PDF file attached titled Bill. followed by several numbers. It also appeared as a Fwd: file which is another red flag that it could be dangerous. I tried a reply request to the individual sending it to identify themselves before I would open the attachment. Their server rejected my request and it bounced.
I have looked up islandmotorsports and it is a legitimate business in Buena Park. I emailed customer service there but am not likely to get a response. Has anyone else here gotten this or a similar contact?

My concern is that when we share our contact info with others we believe are helping us here, we are also potentially compromising our network from the bottom up. I cannot stress enough the need to guard against virus' and spyware. Be careful what you open!!!

If anyone here lives in Buena Park I'd love to hear from you about this business. It's also possible someone could be using their in-house network as a "zombie" to fire off attacks so if you get something from them I'd consider avoiding opening it.

Thanks Real but I already got that off their website. Do you know anything about their business personally? Any reason they might be emailing PDF files to unknown email recipients on the east coast who drive American made cars and have never heard of them? Sounds fishy to me....

    BTW- Welcome to ALIPAC!

    Tired

If you have an ebay account check it to make sure it has not been hijacked ...

Thanks Jim, but that appears OK too.

One thing is for sure, I'm not curious enough about it to open that stinking attachment so maybe I'll never know what it's about. We often send each other hurtling through the internet at light speed checking out posts and other sites, and I for one NEVER stop to think where a link may really be taking me (or what little bit of data may get planted on my machine while I'm there). After all, pretty much anyone can come here and post regardless of their true intentions. That is a really good thing to keep in the back of your mind!

    Hey,

Just a heads up.... Check in the 'HEADERS' of the file/email. PM that info and I will tell you where it "really" is coming from. it is easy to "spam" an email address to make it look like its coming from someplace it ain't.

usually in yahoo/gmail etc.. or wherever, you can "view full headers" --> can you send those to me.. the whole thing please

Thanks BrightNail! I did that first thing and it "appeared" to originate from the site I mentioned. I'd forward that stuff to you and let you have a whack at it but I went ahead and deleted the thing a little while ago to prevent accidentally opening the attachment later. Maybe I can retrieve it from the "reply" that got bounced. Let me check and see if I still have that!......................Oops, I do have the bounced reply but everything other than the return notification is encapsulated in an attachment and I think I'll forego opening that just in case!

Not sure how to take this but received this reply to my inquiry at the Customer Service Dept. of the website from which the email appears to have originated. Of course if they were behind it they wouldn't acknowledge it but at least they responded...

I have also received these unknown emails with PDF attachments. There is no one by the name of puu or ppu. I will check into our site. Thank you for informing me of this.

    Thank You,

Let me just remind EVERYONE, "Do not open email attachments from uknown sources, PERIOD!" Even if they appear to be from a comrade here they could contain malicous code designed to infiltrate your machine and that of anyone you communicate with. ALWAYS check with the person who appears to have sent it first before opening the attached file!
