Re: Status Quo is Unacceptable -Congress must pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform
    Now
    Dear Senator:

The window has not closed on the opportunity to address the critical issue of immigration
reform. We strongly urge your commitment to work together with your leaders on an agreement
that will allow a vote on final passage of legislation this month. American citizens and American
businesses need to have confidence that there is a practical plan in place to address the need to
    fix our dysfunctional immigration laws.
The current system is clearly broken. States and local governments are naturally reacting to the
federal inaction with a patchwork of immigration laws and enforcement measures -- exposing
employers who must deal with a broken legal structure to unfair liability. If nothing is done,
businesses will forced to close, U.S. workers and immigrant workers will lose jobs, work will be
moved overseas where there is an adequate workforce and our national and economic security
will be jeopardized. The status quo is so much more than unacceptable and must not be
    tolerated.
The bill before the Senate, while far from perfect, contains the components of a sound
compromise to achieve comprehensive immigration reform: increased border security; a program
    to recruit future workers needed from abroad when there are not enough U.S. workers available;
a mechanism for undocumented workers to earn legal status; and a new electronic employment
verification system to enhance worksite enforcement.
There is broad support for comprehensive immigration reform legislation from key stakeholders
-business, family groups, immigrant rights organizations, church groups and labor unions. The
process must move forward. The current system does not work for anyone, and the Senate needs
to address this issue now, before this historic opportunity is missed and America as a whole
    suffers the consequences.
    Sincerely,
    Essential Worker Immigration Coalition

    Dear Senator:

The Essential Worker Immigration Coalition urges all sides to continue to work on agreement to
move the debate forward on Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
Senators should continue to reject amendmentsthat are clearly "deal breakers" which would
    prevent passage of thepending legislation.
We seek improvements in the immigration bill as well, and will continue to work to make it
better. But one thing is certain: without Congressional action, employers will face a multiplicity
of hurdles to maintain a sufficient workforce and there will be a serious adverse affect on the
economy. We urge Senators and stakeholders to reach alternative compromise agreements on
various proposed amendments that will allow the process to move forward.
We must have comprehensive immigration reformthat ensures the stability of the current
workforce, and provides the economy the future workers it needs to grow when US workers are
    not available.
The business community understands the complexity and politics involved in the issues. We urge
all stakeholders to work with the Senate as the legislation proceeds through this amendment
process. This may be our only chance for years to achieve reform. We cannot risk losing this
    opportunity.
    Sincerely,
    Essential Worker Immigration Coalition

    And the counter-points should include:

    1. The number of illegal workers in the US is roughly equal to the number of officially unemployed in the US workforce. Apparently, to the EWIC, if you're an American and unemployed, you don't 'register' as a person.

    2. They (illegals) are still law-breakers. Most Americans are not.
Why should we give special rights to people that don't even belong here at th expense of law-abiding Americans?

    3. Why should any US citizen support a bill that was created:
a). With a small cadre of senior senators w/input from Boosh
b). Was crafted 'in secret' essentially, and with input only from specifically chosen interest groups
c). By side-stepping the usual committee process that most all bills go through
d). Whose time was purposefully limited in order to keep senators from examining the bill in detail, to railroad it's acceptance (yea vote)
e). Was not distributed in final text form (only in draft) - whose actual technical legal language was not included -as to help obscure the details which actually are involved.

(etc - add your own ad nauseum...)

TO THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE:

On behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the world’s largest business federation
representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and
region, I urge you to oppose the Dorgan amendment to S. 1348, the “Secure Borders,
Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Reform Act of 2007,â€
    Matthew 19:26

Once again, the benefits of this bill to the American people are nowhere to be seen.
