    E Verify Question

    Hello Everyone,

With E-Verify, does the employer have to provide the recipient's name and DOB, along with the Social Security Number? Or, when the SSN is given, does the Federal Government ask the employer..."Yes, this SSN is legitimate, but does it belong to Joe Smith, DOB 6/26/71?" Because an applicant could have a legitimate SSN, but of course it belongs to someone other than the person applying for the job.

The thing about this though if you are caught, they will have to "PROVE" that you hired an illegal.
Heck these illegals are stealing social security cards, in which if Americans did that we would be thrown in jail for fraud.

It is a no end situation, with this.

It is free to E-Verify, I think. So why isn't all employers doing E-Verify? If they don't E-Verify and hire an undocumented immigrant, the employer should have jail time and a fine.

Yes it is free, our business signed up and it only took a few minutes.

So why isn't all employers doing E-Verify?
Because they want to keep hiring illegal aliens!

But I was thinking many businesses run background checks on their employees, there is no reason e-verify couldn't be a part of the background check. Most companies use a subcontractor to run background checks, maybe we need to lobby these subcontractors to include e-verify in their checks.

There's a hamburger restaurant called Red Robin that just came into our town, and we ate there the other day. Our county is at most 1% Hispanic, maybe 2% but I doubt it, but of those, at least 50% have to be illegals (just arrived in the last few years, and mostly young men). The majority of the population is white with some black people. Anyway, the kitchen staff for this Red Robin was all Latino. The rest of the employees were predominantly white and black. Not sure about the dishwashers. Anyway, I complained to Red Robin about this, and they told me that they use e-Verify. They started several months ago, and this restaurant just opened one month ago. Which is great, but how did they wind-up with all Latinos in the kitchen. I doubt that they are all legal. Maybe some of them are. Are they using someone else's documents (name, DOB, and SSN) to get employment? In that case, e-Verify could be fooled, I would think.

The other possibilities include that they could be Puerto Ricans (I doubt it, but it is possible) or they could all be here on a visa from some other country. The Red Robin person wouldn't go into detail, citing privacy rules.

Any idea what is going on here?

I'm calling foul on this, Ostrich. You shouldn't assume some of the kitchen workers are illegal just because they're Latino. Personally, I think you may have crossed the line when you complained because it sounds like you had absolutely no evidence to validate your suspicions. We're not against Hispanics working in kitchens, however, we are against illegal aliens working. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

You make a great point, MW, and I may have crossed the line. All I know is that five years ago, you wouldn't have seen all Latinos in the kitchen of a restaurant in that town. Seems kinda fishy to me. Why can't they just hire locally? I'm sure that some qualified people who were not Latino applied for jobs there. Now, if I saw one or two Latinos and the rest of the workers were people of the other races, I wouldn't have made a big deal of it.

I understand your concerns and can definitely understand your suspicions. Truth me known, some, or all, of them could possibly be illegal. However, we need to be careful when throwing unfounded accusations out haphazardly because our enemies are constantly watching. They like to utilize these sort of accusations to paint us as racist. It doesn't seem to take much to receive that label lately.
