I have nothing against someone who is in our military and here legally, receiving a chance at citizenship. BUT IT SHOULD BE FOR THAT PERSON. AND NOT INCLUDE CHAIN IMMIGRATION FOR RELATIVES. Please tell your rep NO!

LULAC Action Alert: Ask House Judiciary Committee Members to Support HR 5882!

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee passed HR 6020, sponsored by Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), by a vote of 17 to 12. This is a bill that would help certain immigrant military personnel who have fought for our country and allow them and their family members to naturalize and legalize through increased discretionary provisions. Many House Judiciary Committee members demonstrated resilience in the face of staunch and hostile opposition from restrictionists such as Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX) and Congressman Steve King (R-IA) who oppose fair immigration policies.

This week, possibly Tuesday, September 23, the House Judiciary Committee may also mark up HR 5882, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), that would recapture unused employment based and family based visas, and prevent future waste of visas through a rollover mechanism.

This is the last week that the House will be in session, so we need to ask Judiciary committee members to hang in there and attend the mark up and speak out in support of the recapture bill. We also need to thank them for continuing their valiant efforts to pass legislation that would help immigrants and support family unity.

Please call your members and tell them the following:

· Thank your member if he or she voted for HR 6020 and supported military immigrant families. (Yays: Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Howard L. Berman (D-Calif.), Chris Cannon (R-Utah), Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), John Conyers (D-Mich.), Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Texas), Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), Robert Scott (D-Va.), Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), and Melvin L. Watt (D-N.C.))

· HR 5882 is a common sense and practical bill that would help hundreds and thousands of families unite by not adding one new visa into our system. It is a very small piece of legislation that maximizes already allocated visas.

· HR 5882 is a bill that supports family unity and those who are currently in our legal immigration system: we need to help families and employees who have paid their application fees and have patiently waited in line for years.

Please call the following members of the House Judiciary Committee and ask them to continue their support of immigrant families and the recapture bill!
