Going Home....
I have been off a lot lately, lots of things happening though, and wanted to share it all here.
The first is something told to us by a friend of our daughters. This teen girl pops in every once in a while to say hi and visit. The last few times she has reported to us that at least several of the families living in this complex have decided to go back to Mexico. She also said others her family knows have decided to go back too.
My mother works in a dry cleaners where illegals are employed, and has said some have up and left, not too many yet, but some have.
As well, we have noticed some of the holdouts in this complex have been trying to sell off vehicles, and also doing little roadside sales of higher end items like big rims, truck tool boxes and such.
We have also noticed some changes in the grocery store, as well one clerk we have talked to a lot has said she has noticed less coming in, and also, less spending across the board (tightening budgets?).
One last thing...the day labor center that was put in here in Portland, apparently not working all that well. My husbands co-worker has said some people he knows who are here illegally, including one of his brothers, said the employers are not coming in as much to hire these guys, seems the city has said all who hire through that site have to pay at least $10.00 hourly and sign agreeing to that as well as other stipulations, suddenly they are less interested in hiring the illegals waiting there for jobs. I think this proves that if the employers have to pay "prevailing wage" and other stipulations, they are no longer interested in hiring.
Yes, I know, there is a downturn in the housing market, and building has dropped, which is what a lot of the contractors would hire the illegals for, but it is not all of the jobs.“In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated, and Scorned. Driving by the DL center I saw that they were building some type of utility building with a big doorway--maybe a drive-up laborer depot? They must have found some money to do that--it was about the size of a two car garage. I don't think they have given up yet. But with the weak economy and the holidays coming I bet a lot of them have gone to see family. They will get back in, at least until the fence is completed.

Jim, that is so right. It will take a bit for us to see them gone in good numbers, but every river starts with a trickle, and I'll take even the trickle.
It does say a lot when the clerks in the store see a difference in the spending habits. Took my daughter into the state office one day last week (health coverage for her son) and it was full, and apparently had been that way for days, and it was almost ALL Americans, very few non-English speakers/perceived illegals, in fact, that day, only one brave Spanish speaking couple.
Husbands co-worker (from Mexico) said his brother (here illegally he admitted) used to not worry about applying for food stamps, but he won't now and is having a hard time finding work.“In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated, and Scorned.
