This May Be One of Jimmy Kimmel’s Best Pranks Yet…and It Involves Obamacare

Which would you choose for your healthcare, Obamacare or the coverage available through the Affordable Care Act? (We realize that most Blaze readers know that they are the same thing, but does the average person know that?)

Jimmy Kimmel, the host of an eponymous late night program on ABC, has carved a nice comedy niche by taking cameras to the streets of Los Angeles and exposing just how unaware most Americans are about…well, just about anything.
On Tuesday, Kimmel’s crew stopped people outside of his studio on Hollywood Boulevard and asked them to choose between Obamacare and the Affordable Care Act. Hilarity ensued. One after another, almost every person confidently declared that they would prefer the Affordable Care Act over Obamacare. Many cited the same reasons that most people give when saying they don’t want Obamacare:

    • “Socialism”
    • “Don’t like being forced to buy something”
    • “I just think there are a lot of holes in it. It needs to be revamped.”

At the end of the clip, the anonymous interviewer told victim #1 that Obamacare and the ACA are the same thing. Her response, ”No they’re not. Thanks, you made me look stupid!” The ever-gracious Kimmel put the woman in the front row for the show, saluted her and announced, “Welcome…welcome stupid people. You have a home here with me.”

Obama Voters Don’t Want Free Health Care If They Have to Pay for It

    Posted on October 3, 2013

This is a great point. These dependents don’t pay for anything, why would they start now!

    Check it out:

So let me summarize what Dr. Drew Pinsky was saying in his appearance on CNN last night. He says nobody’s gonna want free health care if they have to pay for it. (summary) “What do you mean, sign up on a website? I’m not gonna sign up on a website. Pay for it? I’ll just use the social safety net, that’s what I’ll do.” Now, I don’t even think they use those terms. That’s just his term for whatever they say to him, but it boils down to nobody’s gonna wanna want free health care if they have to pay for it.

I think he’s being polite. What Pinsky is saying is that Obama’s constituents aren’t gonna be able to figure out how to sign up online. If I translate that correctly, and I usually do understand these things, he’s being polite. He’s saying that Obama’s constituents aren’t gonna be able to figure it out.

Obamacare-hating voters have been suckered by right-wing spin

David Horsey / Los Angeles Times (October 2, 2013)

    By David HorseyOctober 3, 2013, 5:00 a.m.

Americans hate Obamacare but love the Affordable Care Act. That is the big story from one of America’s more reliable sources of information, Jimmy Kimmel.

Kimmel, the comedian who hosts ABC’s late-night talk show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” posted a camera crew on a street in Hollywood and had them interview a random sample of Americans. The question put to these people was “Which do you support, Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act?”

Of those who ended up featured in an appallingly hilarious clip on Kimmel’s show, not a single one knew that Obamacare and the Affordable Care Act are one and the same thing. All but one of the interviewees expressed dislike for Obamacare and gave a variety of reasons for hating it -- it is socialist, it has holes in it, it forces everyone to buy into it, it is anti-American and, I’m not making this up -- it will lead to gun prohibition. They like the Affordable Care Act, however, because it is, well, affordable.

Kimmel’s stunt illustrates a problem at the core of the argument over healthcare and most other contentious issues in this country: Huge numbers of voters are simply ignorant. Either they simply do not pay attention to public affairs or they uncritically accept all the spin thrown at them by partisan politicians and pundits.

This is what has given us the weird phenomenon of big majorities of Americans expressing support for the individual aspects of the Affordable Care Act, even as many of them insist they hate Obamacare.

Republicans, Fox News and radio talkmeisters such as Rush Limbaugh have done an expert job demonizing the healthcare plan from the day it was brought before Congress in 2009. The Democrats got it passed into law, but they ran away from it in the 2010 election. In the process, they not only lost control of the House of Representatives, they lost control of the conversation.

So, here we are now with the government shut down because tea party Republicans are still trying to kill Obamacare, even as thousands of Americans are inundating government websites with queries about how to sign up for one of the health insurance exchanges that kicked into gear Tuesday. The Affordable Care Act is fast becoming a popular and permanent reality in American life, but fantasies about the evils of Obamacare continue to cloud the minds of inattentive citizens from Hollywood to Hampton Roads.

One woman who vehemently condemned Obamacare while singing the praises of the Affordable Care Act was asked by Kimmel's merry pranksters if she thought an informed electorate is vital to a healthy democracy. The woman answered with a firm “yes” -- making herself look like an idiot, not only to the television audience, but to the much bigger audience who have watched the clip online.

However, that was the one answer she got right. An informed electorate is essential to our democracy. If there is any hope for spreading enlightenment, though, it rests with our comedians -- guys such as Kimmel, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. They are almost the only truth-tellers who may be able to grab the attention of the gullible, oblivious crowd.

For our republic, laughter is not only the best medicine, it seems to be the only antidote to spin.
