Famous Black Conservative: Ignore the Naysayers and IMPEACH Obama

The chorus of people calling for the House to impeach President Barack Obama seemingly grows daily. His long record of ignoring the other branches of government to enact his agenda through executive order has outraged constitutional scholars, politicians, and even liberal commentators.
The list of individuals calling for the president’s impeachment is long and varied. It includes retired military officers, at least two former vice-presidential candidates, political commentators, former prosecutors and judges, and well-known celebrities. In fact, the state GOP of South Dakota recently voted to call for Obama’s impeachment.
Others counsel moderation, concerned that a Republican move to impeach Obama prior to the midterm elections would appear to be politically motivated and could cause the GOP to lose their chance at taking control of the Senate.
African-American conservative and former diplomat Alan Keyes makes a compelling argument that such “moderate” viewpoints actually ignore the constitutional reasons why the framers created the impeachment process as they did.

Though they were unfamiliar with Lenin’s maxim about “probing with bayonets,” the key contributors to the U.S. Constitution understood how resistance to tyranny is nurtured. As I have pointed out elsewhere, their own experience before the onset of the Revolutionary War convinced them of the importance of information and deliberation when it comes the moral conviction and political will people require to sustain action in defense of liberty. By charging the House with the responsibility for impeachment, the framers meant to assure that actions and policies that smack of tyrannical intent will be properly investigated, debated and formally laid out before the people, as and when they occur.
The impeachment process is therefore, in the first place, a way of developing information essential to the security of the Constitution. It challenges the representatives of the people to consider that information in light of the principles and requirements of constitutional government. If they see dangers, the process challenges them clearly and formally to articulate those dangers to their constituents, in a fashion consonant with the fateful consequence of neglecting to deal with them. This is consistent with the statesmanlike understanding of politics that makes concern for the common good of the society the ultimate focal point of citizen activity and concern.

Into what is often an emotional environment among those frustrated by Obama’s attacks on the Constitution, Keyes inserts a highly cogent, objective argument in favor of impeachment. Keyes argues that the impeachment process–regardless of its eventual outcome–was designed as a means of investigating alleged wrongdoing and, through that investigation, informing the American citizenry about the truth or falsity of those accusations.
We can see the accuracy of this argument in reviewing the Clinton impeachment hearings, through which Clinton’s attempts to evade truthful testimony by questioning the definition of “is” became a national joke. Though the Democrat-controlled Senate voted to acquit Clinton, the nation was made more aware of the character of their president.
What the citizenry chooses to do with that information is almost irrelevant. Through the process of impeachment, assuming it is handled appropriately, the House can help educate its citizens, and an informed citizenry is vital to a robust democracy.
