Middle School Teacher Here On Student Visa Charged With Child Molestation

RICHMOND COUNTY, GA (The Augusta Chronicle) – A Hephzibah Middle School teacher arrested last week on a child molestation charge was granted bond Tuesday.


Rumah Byrapaka, 24, was granted a $15,000 bond on the child molestation charge and a $10,000 bond on a separate charge of enticing a child for indecent purposes.


Additional charges will be filed against Byrapaka, according to the district attorney’s office.


If Byrapaka can post bond, she will be released from the Charles B. Webster Detention Center but will be placed in a federal detention center on an immigration hold.


Byrapaka is not a U.S. citizen, has a student visa and faces deportation.
The district attorney’s office did not oppose bond, but said the family of the 13-year-old boy did.


According to the office, the boy is in love with Byrapaka and used to sneak out of his home to meet her.


Judge Scott Allen set multiple conditions on the bond, including no contact with the boy or his family, no contact with people under 18, no teaching at any school, notifying the court if and when she is released from federal custody, residing with her family in Columbia County and surrendering her passport to the district attorney’s office.


According to arrest warrants, Byrapaka sent nude pictures and explicit text messages to the boy and engaged in kissing and indecent touching with him at the school.


She was placed on administrative leave with pay by the Richmond County School System after her arrest. A spokesperson said there is no update on her employment status.
