Thread: MULTI is BETTER than MONO?! WHO SAYS?!

The so-called "linguistic experts" of the Dallas Independent School District REALLY TURN OFF sensible people! We get SICK and TIRED of hearing these pseudo-linguists claim that having to LEARN English will somehow DAMAGE a NON-English speaking child or that a MULTILINGUAL brain functions "better" than a MONOLINGUAL one. Well, my Brazilian friend and I have contested them as being WRONG on BOTH counts! And they ARE wrong! My brain runs on English, Spanish, and Portuguese, yet I DON'T believe that this NECESSARILY makes me ANY smarter! Ditto for my Brazilian friend, whose brain functions on FIVE languages--Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, and English (and with a BACHELOR'S degree in FOREIGN languages at that!) The brains of MOST of our fellow Americans run just on ENGLISH, and our friends get along on ONE language JUST FINE!

Is this one of those trick questions? They're saying that it would hurt a non-english speaker to learn english, BUT it's better to know more than one language? They can't have it both ways.

Considering it's Dallas, looks like they're saying spanish speaking kids are too dumb to learn english, so english speaking students should learn spanish. Wow!

As a native spanish speaker, who lives in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, I take offense that it is assumed all spanish speakers are as ignorant and illiterate as uneducated illegal aliens from mexico & latin america.

Multi-linguism is a great thing, maybe the Dallas school system had better start making progress in teaching these kids of illiterates to speak ENGLISH!

IMO THEY DONT WANT IMMIGRANTS TO LEARN ENGLISH. IN THIS WAY THEY KEEP THEM ISOLATED SO THEY CAN ABUSE THEM. WHEN THEY LEARN ENGLISH THEY CAN READ UP ON LAWS AND CO-MINGLE WITH AMERICANS. THEN THEY WANT TO TAKE LUNCH BREAKS AND JOIN OR ORGANIZE UNIONS. CANT HAVE THAT.
