    Dear,Mr.stevetheroofer

Thank you for contacting me regarding legislation to provide legal residency status to certain illegal immigrants.
Hearing your views helps me represent Kentucky in the United States Senate.

In your correspondence, you expressed concern regarding proposed legislation known as the Development, Relief, and Education for Minors Act. As you may know, the current Majority in Congress brought up the DREAM Act legislation before the full US Senate for debate during the so called"lame duck" session. This legislation seeks to offer a special path to citizenship to illegal immigrants within a certain age range who graduate from a US high school or obtain their GED and then serve in the Armed Forces or attend college.

I and 41 of my Senate colleagues voted against consideration of the DREAM Act, preventing this legislation from see further debate. I appreciate the tremendous contributions to our country made by generations of legal immigrants. At the same time however, I do not believe we should reward illegal behavior with US citizenship or taxpayer-funded educational benefits. Our national priority should be securing our borders and providing for our national security.

Furthermore, this far-reaching and controversial social policy has not been debated by a single Senate committee in the past seven years, and it had nothing to do with the most pressing issue of getting our economy back on track.

When the US Senate next debates these matters, I will continue to urge my colleagues to prioritize our national security and not reward individuals for breaking our laws.

Thank you again for contacting me about this important matter. If you would like to receive periodic updates about issues such as this, please sign up for my eNewsletter at http://mcconnell.senate.gov/. and become a fan of my page on Facebook, by visiting http://www.facebook.com/mitchmcconnell
