Records checks put 2 Mexican convicts in custody

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a convicted murderer and convicted sex offender in separate incidents this week.

The agency discovered the pair of illegal entrant felons Tuesday while running record checks at processing centers where apprehended illegal border crossers are taken after arrest.

Agents apprehended the convicted murderer, a 47-year-old man from Nogales, Sonora, on Tuesday after he jumped the fence at the international line in Nogales, according to a Border Patrol news release. He was taken to the processing center in Nogales, where a records check revealed he had been convicted of second-degree murder in Miami in 1992, the release said. He pleaded guilty and served 15 years.

The convicted sex offender, a 37-year-old man from Jalisco, Mexico, was apprehended at 8 p.m. Tuesday near Tucson and taken to the Tucson Sector detention facility, according to the release. A records check showed that he had been convicted of lewd acts with a child in Los Angeles in 1998. He served one year in jail and 60 months on probation, the release said.

They are both being held pending prosecution for re-entry as aggravated felons.

From Oct. 1 through July 31, Border Patrol agents in Tucson Sector have apprehended 117 people who had been convicted of sexual assault and 59 who have been convicted of homicide, the release said.
