    7 Arrested in Connection with Cockfighting Ring

    ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) - Investigators arrested 7 people in connection with an alleged cockfighting ring in Asheboro.

    On Saturday, The Randolph County Sheriff's Department along with several other agencies searched a home at 7405 US Hwy. 64 West. When officers arrived at the home, several people were seen running from the home. Officers apprehended most of the people but two escaped, officials said.

    Investigators arrested 7 people and seized 3 firearms, one of which had been reported stolen. A felony amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and cash was also seized by investigators.

    Police arrested David Worth Gallimore, 49, of 7405 US Hwy. 64, High Point; Humberto Castro Mondragon, 51, of 665 Painter Rd., High Point; Efrain Escobar Velasquez, 61; Cesar Augusto Cruz-Gonzalez, 35, and Alejandro Garcia Mariano, 27, of 828 Burney Ave. Winston-Salem; Gumesindo Vasquez Ferrer, 27, of 10411 S. Main St., High Point; Isidro Valazquez Ferrer, 21, of 1618 Kivett St., High Point.

    Each of the suspects was charged with cockfighting and cruelty to animals, both of which are felonies. The bonds ranged from $2,500 to $50,000.

    The Humane Society and Randolph County Animal Control located 24 gaming roosters at the house, 3 of which were deceased due to injuries sustained in cockfighting.

    The Health Department also seized 400 chickens which were found to be living in deplorable conditions.

    Randolph County, NC -- A tip to the Randolph County Sheriff's Department lead to seven people being arrested on suspicion of illegal cockfighting.

    The Randolph County Sheriff's Department; along with Asheboro Police, Randolph County Health Department's Animal Control, The Humane Society of the United States and Immigration Customs Enforcement, all joined forces to execute a search warrant along Highway 64 West.

    Officers arrested seven people and seized three firearms, one of which was reported stolen, and an undisclosed amount of money. Officers also found enough marijuana and drug paraphernalia at the scene to warrant a felony charge.

    The Humane Society and Randolph County Animal Control collected 24 gaming roosters, three of which were dead due to injuries resulting from cockfighting. Animal Control also seized 400 other chickens on the property, which were found to be living in deplorable conditions.

    Each suspect is charged with cockfighting and cruelty to animals, which are both felonies. One suspect had additional charges related to the Marijuana found at the scene.

    Bonds were set for the suspects ranging from $2,500 to $50,000. Six of the suspects are being detained for deportation.
