ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. -- The driver of an SUV stopped along Interstate 40 on Monday said he had no idea how nearly $400,000 in cash got into a laundry basket in the back of the vehicle, Alamance County deputies said.

Deputies said an officer spotted the man, Vicenta Medina Zuniga, 32, driving erratically while making sudden, multiple lane changes and nearly colliding with another vehicle.

The deputy pulled over the vehicle, and a K-9 alerted the deputy to the presence of drugs in the driver's side door, deputies said.

No drugs were found, but $390,740 cash was found concealed in the basket. The passenger also claimed he had no idea where the money came from, deputies said.

Zuniga was cited for an improper lane change.

The money was turned over to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration on suspicion it was the proceeds from drug trafficking.

Deputies said the investigation hasn't been completed.
