NCLR is urging you to take action immediately to help secure the health of our nation’s children. Over the past few weeks, anti-immigrant legislators in the U.S. Congress are misrepresenting the issues, and attempting to undercut legal immigrants’ access to programs that address health, education, housing, and even hunger. Instead of fixing the broken immigration system when they had the chance, these legislators are pursuing a path that would harm immigrant families – taking health care away from children.

During the debate on the immigration bill, these legislators were claiming that their concern was with undocumented immigrants, not those here legally. But now they seek to prohibit legal immigrants families from accessing critical programs in times of need.

Their latest attack is an attempt to strip language from a key health bill that will provide access to care for legal immigrant children and pregnant women who desperately need access to health coverage.

For nearly a decade NCLR in partnership with many organizations has been working to restore equity for legal immigrant families, ensuring that they can access the Medicaid and State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), when they fall on hard times. These families were abandoned during welfare reform, when Congress decided to enact a five-year residency requirement for legal immigrants to access these programs, despite any need for health care.

In the U.S. House of Representatives, we achieved these goals (and more), when the Children’s Health and Medicare Protection (CHAMP) Act (H.R. 3162) was introduced. Among other provisions beneficial to Latinos, it includes contains important language that would:

Restore a state option to provide access to Medicaid and SCHIP for legal immigrant children and pregnant women

Ensure more families could gain access to health care by providing more funding for language assistance
We need to protect the integrity of the CHAMP Act and the critical provisions that would protect legal immigrants. We urge you to call your representative immediately to say that you:


Support the CHAMP act, and the important components that make sure that Latino and immigrant families can get health care when they need it.
Oppose any amendments that would take away health care from Latino children in the U.S. and create new barriers to health coverage for American families, especially legal immigrant families.

CAPWIZ, should change its posted numbers, so that all the LARAZA types call ICE instead.

NO ONE who cannot support their family should be given a green card OR citizenship !! This info should be checked when you apply for a green card and/or citizenship.If you have accepted federal help then you DO NOT have a snowballs chance in H--L to be part of this country PERIOD !!!

I just found out homes being built in my community for lower income citizens are available to green card holders.These homes should be vailable to people who have lived and contributed to our nation for many years instead of recent freeloaders,legal & illegal, coming here for one reason...to suck this country dry.

This is another example of our leaders giving away citizens earnings to those who have NO right to them and another item to put on the long list of things we must fight to change.

That's because legal immigrants are supposed to be self-sufficient when they enter the United States. Why allow someone to legally immigrant here if they are immediately going to go on the welfare rolls? That certainly wouldn't be fair to the American taxpayer! The 1996 welfare law removed legal immigrants rights to welfare, however, President Bush’s 2003 budget included a proposal to restore food stamps to legal immigrants who have lived in the United States for five years. Once legal immigrants become naturalized, then they are eligible for all the benefits of an American citizen because then they too are Americans!

In 1997, Congress restored Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to most immigrants who were already in the United States when the welfare law was enacted, and in 1998, it restored food stamp eligibility for immigrant children and for elderly and disabled persons who were here before August 1996.

As I said earlier, why should a legal immigrant be eligible for welfare the minute they touch American soil? That just doesn't make any sense.

This is a racist statement. The only reason they are worried is because the Latino children might not have health care. In reality they are only worried about their own race. And of course they are using their children yet again!

Oh, Ok I will make a concession. Here is the plan
Put a Peso slot in the statue and a sign that says: Please insert 25 pesos and pull down on Pete’s arm for a one way bus ticket to Tijuana. For the first lucky 12 million, tamales and mescal will be served as a snack on the bus.

I really find it ironic that LA RAZA does not care about Latino children until they get into the U.S. It seems they have no concern about the children's health or if they starve south of the border, but only when they come here illegally.

For instance the very rich and the Mexican government care very little about the poor and starving children until they step over the U.S. border and all of a sudden there is this supposed concern. If LA RAZA really cared about starving woman and children then they would take some of the money they steal from the U.S. tax payers and help all the children and not just those of illegal aliens.

Non-citizens shouldn't have access to any of our social programs.
