According to task force officers, the north side of town is a not a safe place to be at night, especially since five shootings happened in the area last weekend--all within a 30 hour period.

Officers Dominic Mena and Gilbert Torres patrolled the streets of Visalia, looking for suspected gang activites.

"This is a violent type of detail we have here," Officer Mena said, "Dealing with people with guns, dealing with violent offenders."

Officer Mena said last weekend's shootings weren't related but all involved gangs.

Residents said they don't feel safe with gangs on the streets at night and hope the shootings stop.

Former gang member Joshua Huerta spends his time teaching kids about the dangers of joining gangs at a neighborhood center.

"We have our center here," Huerta said. "It's in the mix of these shootings and we really hope that it will stop soon."

Huerta said volunteers at the center warn kids of the dangers of gang life.

Officers registered former gang members on parole and arrested one man for allegedly violating parole during the detail.

Officer Mena said when this unit patrols the streets, residents should feel safer.

"Hopefully they will see us out in force and to hope to deter any type of future violence that's been going on in Northern Visalia." ¶
