State health officials tested 286 employees at a Greenville poultry-processing plant for tuberculosis after a case of TB was reported there, and nearly half had a positive skin test.

The investigation at Columbia Farms began a week ago after tests on the first individual confirmed active TB, said Thom Berry, spokesman for the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The positive skin tests on 131 of the workers means they were exposed to TB sometime in their lives, not that they have active disease, he said.

Of those workers, 63 had chest X-rays, revealing two possible cases of active disease, though officials are still awaiting confirmatory tests, he said. Neither is showing any symptoms, but they are being treated along with the initial individual, he said. Treatment involves taking antibiotics for six to 12 months.

Berry said investigators were not surprised by the number of positive skin tests because so many of the employees are foreign-born. People born in other countries are nearly nine times more likely to have TB than those born in the U.S., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"We suspect many may have been infected in their home countries before they came to the U.S.," he said.

There is no danger of spreading the disease through the chickens, Berry said.

Officials at House of Raeford in North Carolina, which owns the Rutherford Road plant, could not be reached for comment.

There were about 14,000 cases of active TB recorded nationwide in 2005, CDC reports. And there are about 300 new cases a year in South Carolina, Berry said. One was confirmed at Clemson University on Sunday. None of those cases is related to the drug-resistant strain identified in an Atlanta lawyer last month.

Berry said TB investigations are common in South Carolina.

"When a physician or hospital makes a diagnosis of TB, it's reported to us," Berry said. "And when we get that report, we begin a close-contact investigation."

Though some 900 people work at the plant, only 286 were tested, based on a CDC formula that determines the closest contacts, he said. But others will be tested if necessary, he said, and investigators will return to the plant in about eight weeks to retest the workers to make sure none has become active in the interim.

The point here was... TB was almost eliminated from the United States until recently. But due directly to the surge of illegal immigration its making a comeback nationwide! I also read an article some months ago that Hansons (leprosy!) is also making a big comeback due to massive uncontrolled illegal immigration. When people come legally they are subject to numerous medical tests, X-rays, etc...so their health is not an issue to those here. Illegals bring and spread what ever germs they have in their countries, most of the third world is not a very healthy place.

Politically correct, their classification is: illegal 'Migrant', or 'alien' ...

There's a HUGE difference between a legal IMMIGRANT, and an illegal 'Migrant/alien' ...

    Have a nice day..

No need for ‘mass roundups’, simply ENFORCE EXISTING law*& MANDATE the worker ID, ..but SEVEN amnesties? Hmm, WHO cried wolf?!

Yes, because of our "open border" system, we have brought in diseases that were gone many years ago. It's very frightening - I'm very afraid of polio coming back because it does still exist in other countries. I went through that time, and it was no picnic. And, as we know, ANYONE can walk over the border from Mexico, from all different countries, including terrorists.

It's ridiculous that we have been trying to wipe out all these diseases, and now they're in our backyard because we have not cared about checking peoples' medical status.

    Spinach, Chicken...

    What's next? Mustard?
Sorry for the quirky since of humor...but its true. For those who support illegal immigration, I highly suggest they stop for a moment and look at it from an economical stand point, since they FAIL to see it from a patriotic standpoint...
Lets say Canada was selling us..I don't know...pig parts. (first thing that came to mind) Ok, so American and Canada are in a trade agreement for pig parts, when all of a sudden, BAM! Turns out workers in the pig parts facility caught....Ebola. (a random disease) . America will IMMEDIATELY STOP trading with Canada, ban the pig part product..and not to mention, try to find out who all bought pig parts.
This of course was an extreme...but real in a since. Chicken, which we don't know who we trade with, will no longer be brought, killing a part of the US economy. American people will not want to buy chicken from a company who has infected workers (even if its contagious or not, you know how news is), the product will suffer, meaning factory will go bankrupt, dropping OUR employment and OUR economic hold.
TB has been going up everywhere in America..and it didn't have to do so.
Illegals are Illegal..thats why we call them illegals.

The main people to blame for that are those who are pro-amnesty.
