Cueller/Cornyn "border solution" weakens existing law and could be conferenced with Senate amnesty bill

Friends,

We have a troubling situation developing today in the House of Representatives. New reports indicate that House GOP Leaders are eager to quickly pass a bipartisan bill drafted by Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas). The bill attempts to address the ongoing flood of illegal border crossers along the southern border, but in practice, it would only deflect attention from the real issue -- the Obama Administration's unwillingness to enforce immigration laws. In fact, the Administration already has every necessary tool at its disposal to end the crisis.

We need your urgent help to immediately stop any momentum this legislation may already have.

The Cuellar/Cornyn bill does address the 2008 human trafficking law that's being used as an excuse for the ongoing border crisis, but the Border Patrol is saying that only about 1 of every 5 illegal border crossers is actually an Unaccompanied Alien Child that could fall under the protections of that law. The bill also includes most portions of Rep. Michael McCaul's "border security" bill, H.R.1417, that would actually weaken existing law.

Please help us in this effort by sending the fax below. After the red action box, you can read a story that includes our Director of Government Relations Rosemary Jenks' analysis of the bill.
