Thread: NumbersUSA Announces Victory for Now on E-verify

CONGRATULATIONS, FRIENDS,

I alerted all of you earlier today on my home page blog that the U.S. House leadership was in deep backroom maneuvering to pass a convoluted amendment that would make it possible for Congress to kill the E-Verify program next year without doing anything -- and without being accountable for directly doing so.

We needed immediate mobilization of America's citizens to let the Members of the House know that the E-Verify program to keep illegal aliens out of jobs is wildly popular -- and that the citizens will pay close attention to anybody who messes with it.

You all are fantastic!

Members of the House Ways & Means and Judiciary Committees, as well as the leadership of both Parties, were hammered with phone calls and faxes all afternoon.

We have just received reassurance from our allies on the Hill that the enemies of E-Verify got the message -- at least for the moment.

Negotiations are supposed to be back on track for re-authorizing E-Verify without any seeds of self-destruction.

(Like many government programs, it has to be re-authorized every few years. If Congress doesn't re-authorize it by November, it will be eliminated, and illegal aliens will have pretty much free run of any job they want in America.)

Leaders of the U.S. House know that they would face a gigantic public backlash if they were to directly and clearly kill the popular E-Verify program, so opponents have been toying with a sneaky amendment that would allow Congress to kill E-Verify next year simply by not taking a certain kind of funding action.

As of this morning, the supporters of illegal foreign workers had worked themselves into bargaining strength to undermine E-Verify for next year. That was a departure from what we had heard from the House Democratic and Republican leadership just days ago -- that they had agreed to pass the Calvert/Shuler bill which is a 10-year re-authorization of E-Verify. The expectation was that it would be brought up next week for a floor vote.

Both Republicans and Democrats were involved in the anti-E-Verify effort.

The E-Verify program is perhaps the most effective way to drive illegal aliens out of the country.

The most pressing need right now is to make E-Verify mandatory for every employer in the country (something the SAVE Act by Rep. Shuler, D-N.C., would do).

But while the federal government stalls, many states and local governments are making E-Verify mandatory for businesses in their jurisdiction. The increasing number of governments doing this has thrown supporters of illegal immigration into a panic. They are involved in a massive campaign involving tens of millions of dollars to stop the SAVE Act from being passed and to cripple E-Verify even as a voluntary program.

NumbersUSA will be constantly vigilant and will oppose any and every attempt to weaken the current E-Verify, while doing all it can to make it mandatory.

I just told my husband about this and he said, he remembers a non-union, illegal alien who worked on the Taxiway 75 at LAX while he was still there. The guy electrocuted himself. He was a sub of a sub of subcontractor. Ya, we don't need the E-verify system.
