Alert! Dream Act In Senate Now!!!

Reid just scheduled the vote for 11:00. Debate on the floor has started. Reid looked pretty discouraged. He said the vote was probably futile but had to move forward with it.

    Call, call, call!!!

Okay, here's what's going on as far as I can understand it from Numbers. The Senate version of this bill is different than the House version. Reid said it didn't make sense to have 2 different bills, so he wanted unanimous consent this morning to wait for the House version and vote on that one instead, so that if it passed it would go directly to the President for signing. Republicans objected, so Reid is now obligated to hold a vote on his bill because he filed cloture on it. That means if passed it has to go to conference then to merge his bill with the House version, which probably won't happen until next week. According to Rosemary from Numbers, the Republicans are hanging tough to defeat this and there are still Democrats who will vote against this, so it doesn't look like Reid has the votes. Where it goes from here, nobody knows yet. As of right now, the Senate vote on Reid's bill is still at 11:00.

The vote at 11:00 is to end the fillabuster and begin debate on the Senate bill. If the Democrats fail to end the fillabuster, the bill is dead.

Right, if the Senate passes a different version, then it will go to a joint conference committee to resolve the differences. Also with one bill from the House, the Senate has to pass it without amendments for it to go for signing, otherwise the House has to approve the changes before it can be signed. Also, I think the House bill has to be put on the Senate calendar. They can't just swap out the existing Senate bill for the House bill and then vote. The bill has to go through the Senate process.
