DEAR MOST ACTIVE REPUBLICAN FAXERS,

Please phone Sen. Ensign's (R-Nev.) offices, identify yourself with your Republican credentials and help his staff see that if he votes for the amnesty this afternoon (by voting for cloture), he will make it much more difficult to elect Republicans to the Senate in 2008.

And that is his job. He is head of the committee trying to re-elect incumbent Republicans and to elect Republican challengers to Democrats.

I am sending this only to those of you who have sent a lot of faxes and have been most active in trying to stop the amnesty for illegal aliens.

Sen. Ensign should be one of the five extra NO Senators to help us kill S. 1639 early this afternoon.

But, instead, he remains undecided, which probably means he wants to vote YES on cloture this afternoon.

This is a very strange position considering two important factors:

1. Until recently, Sen. Ensign was one of our most reliable Senators in opposing radical immigration ideas.

He has a career B overall immigration grade. During the last two Congresses, he has earned an A grade. More than that, we have looked to him to take the kind of leadership that Sens. Sessions, DeMint and Vitter are taking now.

2. As noted above, he is supposed to be helping Republican Senators get re-elected next year.

Yet, he seems to be paying more attention to pleasing the wildly unpopular Pres. Bush and his amnesty goals than helping Republican Senators have an immigration position that would be pleasing to the voters.

Sen. Ensign must decide whether he is going to lead from the amnesty wing of the Republican Party, which has seen Sen. McCain's presidential campaign popularity and George Bush's presidential popularity plunge over this issue -- or from the anti-amnesty wing that includes nearly all of the House Republicans and the majority of GOP Senators and the vast majority of Republican and Independent voters.

For Republicans, it would be a shame if the Bush/Rove White House not only ruins the reputation of Sen. Ensign but in the process ruins the chances of re-election of many of those seeking it next year.
