Trudeau invites Ivanka to ‘politically correct’ Broadway play

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invited Ivanka Trump to a Broadway show in New York City about a small town “opening their homes to an international community of strangers.”


According to The Hill, Trudeau took to the stage prior to the show to talk about how important Canada’s relationship is with the United States. United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, along with 100 other ambassadors, were in attendance Wednesday night.


“There is no relationship quite like the friendship between Canada and the United States,” Trudeau said on stage, according to a video from the event. “The deep ties … of business, of friends, of culture, of people traveling back and forth, families of all these connections. This story, this amazing show is very much about that. And it’s about friendship, as well.”


The show’s website describes the play as follows: “38 planes with 6,579 passengers stranded in a remote town in Newfoundland. The locals opened their hearts and homes, hosting this international community of strangers–spurring unexpected camaraderie in extraordinary circumstances.”


Trudeau made an effort to connect with the show’s topic in his speech.

“When we think about our friends, we think about the people we like to kick back with after a hard day at the office, who we want to see on the weekend, maybe go camping or golfing with, or people you want to catch up with for birthdays, mark milestones. But that’s actually not what friendship is about,” Trudeau said. “Our friends are there for the tough times when you lose a parent or a loved one, when you get knocked off your path in a difficult moment in your life. And that is, ultimately, what this story is all about, being there for each other … being open, being engaged, and knowing that drawing together through dark times is what is very best for the human spirit.”

At the end of the show, the prime minister told CBC that Ivanka enjoyed the play.
