As part of a series on immigration, Room for Debate last week convened a discussion on the issue of young illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children with their parents and were raised and educated here. The forum preceded an article by David Gonzalez, a Times reporter, that appeared on Sunday, titled, “A Family Divided by 2 Words, Legal and Illegal.â€

Everyone has to leave the country even the anchor babies. Laws have been broken way too long, and these illegals have not assimilated to even learn English.

The Dream Act’s promise is not only to recognize that undocumented students were brought here by events beyond their control, and not only to recognize their individual contributions to a strong America. Just as importantly, the Dream Act would foster the growth of healthy immigrant communities, and enhance their commitment to a shared American future.
Second, Hispanic illegals have chosen not to become part of the shared American community. They have chosen to isolate themselves, unlike all previous waves of immigration.
