Thread: Racism in suburban America

We have lived where we are, for a long time, maybe too long. We have no choice really, we have stuck it out as a matter of practicallity, and hope soon to have a chance to be "impractical".

In the meantime, we have seen some changes in the demographics of this complex. In the beginning, it was a mix, mainly white and Hispanic. Then suddenly we found ourselves the only white, English speaking family here. We endured a manager (Latino) who was encouraging the Latino tenants to harass us endlessly, he attempted to keep our kids indoors and away from the Latino kids. We thwarted those efforts and he left the job in the middle of the night.

It has been a long haul since that, and eventually things have calmed, current tenants have realized they were better off leaving us alone. A new landlord has changed things too. He started out mild, and somewhat complacent, but recent times he has become fully fed-up with the group that was here, he knows they are mainly here illegally and also have brought a huge amount of crime to his complex, plus increased city scrutiny.

We have our own little, self-built haven in our backyard. My teen son, and I (while my husband was hard at work), several years back, built a fence to section off our yard. In the middle of the duplex shared yard, there is now a hedge (landlord did this), and two panels for final privacy we put in.

We have a family "tradition" that when it is not raining out (western Oregons winter and spring), we have a fire pit (ok, so it is an old metal washtub on our patio with pea gravel in it) we will have a nice little fire in, after dinner usually, maybe roast a marshmallow or two.

A few nights ago, we were out there, quietly sitting, enjoying the crackle of the fire and the lack of rain, when the group next door came out to sit outdoors too. As they sat, we could hear them speaking in Spanish, but then clear as a bell, in clear English, one guy chimed in "man, we're getting overrun with white people here all of the sudden". We knew he said this for our benefit, but I signaled to my son and daughter to ignore them, maybe even laugh (of course this same guy will turn his vehicle around in a limited area and use our front yard to back into and then peel out leaving muddy gouges in the grass, and he always looks back and laughs).

What this guy was refering to was the current changing demographics of our complex. We have had a sudden unflux of white families moving in. We have wondered if it was in desperation as the apartments, aside from the five duplexes in the back where we are, are just awful. Lack of jobs and evictions I presumed, this landlord does not do credit checks or make reference calls.

Our mouthy neighbor showed me, really what I knew all along, they have wanted this to be a Latino only complex, they cannot stand that their own have been moving out (we have heard many going home) and in those vacancies, Americans have moved in, something they simply cannot stand to see.

With all due respect....what do you expect ?

The reality is that it has become hip to be anti white, it is okay to make racial comments about whites, and it is okay to try and keep them down.

This definetly strated getting out of control during the Oj Simpson trial.

The guy had his head smashed with a brick, as people stood around snapping pics and laughing, they pretty much got a slap on the wrist and a litle inconveinence.

After that, it has turned into a free for all.....need more examples

Jenna 6 - yes I will admit, the little bastard that hung effigy of blacks should be punished, but, when jumped by 6 blacks, they try to convict them as adults and with a hate crime

Obama and sharpton are donw there fighting for their civil rights and did everything to almost have the entire case thrown out

In this world, it is becoming, if you are white, suck it up buttercup and take it

Oh, sdbrit, I agree with you 100% on this issue. I have learned to counteract this with sarcastic humor towards them.

A bit ago, a manager we had here, was telling our then 13 year old son he could not climb a tree all the other kids were climbing, he asked "why?" and got some nonsense response, and our son, ahead for his age asked "why not, is it because I'm white and they aren't?". He then challenged this man about what would happen if a white manager was telling the only Hispanic kid in the complex he or she could not climb the tree the other kids (who were white) were climbing? This guy got mad and just stomped away.

We have learned to laugh at them, this is the best response, or ignore them, and when they do not get the reaction they hoped for (usually to start a confrontation), they are then powerless, it deflates them completely.

Also, people need to start being more vocal about this bashing stuff, and making these people a bit shocked at the response, and they will eventually stop, we saw evidence of that here. We have sat back being nice for too long. True equality can only come when everyone stops being afraid to speak out and afraid of "offending" others. Kindness is needed, but some "in your face" tactics need to be employed to stop the injustices we have been seeing.

I have kind of quit being nice, just seems like the people who yell,win.

A few years ago, my girlfriend and our kids were shopping at Ralphs, she had a Latino lady, not paying any attention where she was going bump into her, the Latino lady turned and started yelling in Spanish, my girlfriend lookad and said,

"speak english alright"

Her son, about 25 or so, came racing up, right in my girls face, pointing a finger in her chest and said that in this country, it is necessario to speak both languages ( except his mom I guess)

That didnt sit well with me, I walked up a little slower, and I will be the first to admit, I made a racial comment, but hey, you dont get in my famalies face no matter what race you are.

He turned to me, pointed his finger in my face, and that was when he got cold cocked on the left side of his face, it was a perfect shot too, he bounced off those self check out machines

finally the police arrived

long story,short....we ended up outside with him blabbering in spanish. Heres the kicker, two white people saw the altercation, and were honest, about 6 Latinos saw it.....every one of them said I just walked up out the blue and hit the guy after calling him an F'ing ****

They said my girlfriend was a liar, that nothing happened with her....I was floored. The Hispanic cop, cuffed me, and said I had to go to jail until is was cleared upt

Now, I am not stupid, and it wasn't my first dance, so I asked if he had a second pair of cuffs for the Latino, he told me that guy wasn't going to jail. I explained that since he said it had to be cleared up, that meant mutual combat in California, everyone had to be arrested...not just me, or I would have to contact a lawyer for discrimination.

Finally, a supervisor came out and reviewed the tapes...saw what happened, even though there was no vocal, and told the guy, he started it, and asked me if I wanted to press charges.

Everyone went home that night, the police told me, I should never take matters in my own hands, I explained to them, when it is my family, I will do what I deem necessary.....besides, when you absolutely need them, the police ar eonly 10 minutes away

I can fully understand where you were coming from. I can also sympathise. I have told my kids, it is within their rights to defend themselves when attacked physically.

This adult guy who got into your daughters face, was she a minor? If so, then that is a whole other issue as well, which should have been addressed. The previous manager here had been in our sons face, yelling at him to go home, my husband got into his face and had his finger in this guys chest telling firmly, between his clamped teeth, to stop harassing our underage son or police would be involved. He also invoked a good sense of fear in him, since there was a comparative size, weight and muscle mass difference......

All was quiet after that, then this guy left the job in the middle of the night (apparently he also had been keeping cash rent money from the landlord too).

I believe you have to show your kids this kind of stuff is not allowable, and you as an adult will not tolerate being harassed and intimidated, we have lost this in our society and the liberals have brainwashed too many into being passive, rolling over to be kicked by others (the white guilt thing).

The guy should be very lucky he didn't try that in States where stand your ground laws and CCL's are in effect. Lay a hand on me or the wife he'd have been lucky to walk away. Next time if you have a cell phone pull it out and start recording...

The facts seem to suggest you were protecting not only yourself, but your family from what you believed was an imminent, harmful or offensive touching from another, otherwise know as self-defense against an assault!

I hope you pressed charges against this punk!

nope, didnt see the point....when I lived in the midwest, we just dealt with things ourselves, and moved on

I am not sure what we have here, to protect yourself from someone you truly believed to be a danger to yourself or family. Oregon is known as a liberal state, and recently there have been issues with some police shootings. Cop comes upon someone who seems mentally deranged, and this person will come at the cops with such delusional force, they wind up shot, and then the debate rages that the cops were using excessive deadly force.

I stand more towards the cops side of it all, than the others. I know most people, even cops, would rather not have to ever use deadly force, but in their jobs, coming across someone who is on something, can be very dangerous.

Unfortunatly it seems to be a famous thing everywhere now to be anti white. I know what it's like. We do need to stand up against it because we have the right to be treated fair too.

When I worked for someone that hired illegal aliens, this one Latina broke the laws and did whatever she wanted. The white managers let her do it because they felt sorry for her and didn't want to offend her.

I was always nice and friendly to her, but one day she screamed dirty nasty words at me in Spanish and she laughed and threatened me. I had to run out of there to get away from her as fast as I could. She told the white manager that I pushed her when I ran away. The manager told me that she was going to call the police and have me put in jail for assaulting this Latina that threatened me. All of the Hispanics that worked there saw it and they all lied and told the manager that I assaulted her and she didn't do nothing to me.

The manager dropped it all when I let her know that she could be the one going to jail for hiring illegals, pay a fine, lose her business license, and the illegals could be deported. I can't believe that she tried to do that with the trouble she could have been in for it. But she probably thought she wouldn't get in trouble for hiring illegals.
