President Obama mocked Republicans Thursday night for embracing Donald Trump at the expense of the party’s traditional family values and its long-standing tough talk about Russia.
Speaking at the annual Ohio Democratic Party dinner in Columbus, Mr. Obama said of Republicans, “You’re not even consistent anymore.”
“You claim the mantle of the party of family values, and this is the guy you nominate?” Mr. Obama asked. “And stand by and endorse and campaign with? Until finally at the 11th hour, you withdraw your nomination? You don’t get credit for that.”

He was referring to Mr. Trump’s lewd comments about women on a decade-old recording, and of accusations by several women that Mr. Trump has tried to force himself on them. Some Republican officials have withdrawn their endorsements of the nominee.
The president also ridiculed the GOP for accepting Mr. Trump’s praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“You’re the party that’s tough on foreign policy and opposes Russia, then you nominate Trump, whose role model is Vladimir Putin, the former head of the KGB?” Mr. Obama said. “I’m sorry, what happened? It’s disappointing. It really is. Because yes, I’m a Democrat, but I’m an American first.”

The president said Republicans should have known that Mr. Trump, who led the “birther” movement claiming that Mr. Obama wasn’t born in the U.S., would prove to be a divisive presidential candidate.
“The problem is that they’ve been riding this tiger for a long time,” Mr. Obama said. “They’ve been feeding their base all kinds of crazy for years, primarily for political expedience.”
