    My Family is My Country

A conversation was going on at work. The people involved in it were all from a variety of other countries, India, Africa and the Carribbean Islands.

I overheard it. They were talking about the Republicans and seemed to be Obama supporters.

They started talking about the war and the military. I heard one guy say that the military was not for him. The others agreed, not for them either.

I chimed in and nicely said, "Well, we do have to protect the country at times."

One of them responded, "I don't feel any attachment to this country except for opportunities for myself." (You can imagine I felt a knot in my stomach at that comment)

    The others agreed with him!

Then he said, "My country is my family."

I said most Americans believe it goes like this: "God, Country, Family".

I said the reason is if you love your family you know that living in a free and strong country is important.

He said, "If things get bad enough here, I'll just take them back to our country."

On the way home I thought, yep, that's exactly the mentality coming into our country today. It is not about becoming an American, it's about what America can do for them, what they can get out of it.

Well, then I asked myself and where will the true American people run to?
There's no place for us to go and besides, we wouldn't want to.

    Thought I'd share it.

Our elected officials NEVER hear conversations like that. Who would say that in front of a mayor, senator, governor or president. They are SO out of touch with things that we know which they do not know and we try to tell them...

To be specific these people were from, Nairobi, Carribbean Islands and India.

ALl of them have been here for approximately ten years, one of them longer, nearly his whole life I believe. He was the one who actually prompted the comments, while the others agreed with him.

That would have been a good time to inform him that our economy is about to take a dive and give him the link to Priceline.com

This attitude is what is unraveling American identity and unity. This is Bushs' cherished "proposition nation", where all we stand for is pluralism and commerce. Your story illustrates why it's so important for us to keep fighting the fight to preserve what made our nation great--a commonality of purpose, unabashed patriotism and self-respect. We needn't redefine ourselves as a throwaway nation to accommodate those who bring such disrespectful, haughty notions with them.

By the way, I hear this same talk where I live.
