(July 20) -- Police are searching for a missing couple who are believed to have fled to Mexico with their three biological children after abandoning their 4-year-old adopted son and his deceased 3-year-old sister in their rented Bakersfield, Calif., home.

Alberto Garcia, 26, and Carla Garcia, 26, are wanted on felony child endangerment charges and questioning in the death of a child, according to Bakersfield's KBAK-TV, which reported that 3-year-old Serenity Julia Gandara was found dead at the couple's home Sunday. Her brother, who has not been identified, was found sleeping in another room.

Police told The Bakersfield Californian that they found "scars and marks in various stages of healing" on the girl's body.

"There were obvious signs of trauma," police Sgt. David Chase told KBAK. "As far as the actual cause of death, it is preliminary for that."

Police said the abandoned boy had also sustained recent injuries and was placed in protective custody, according to reports. The deceased child and her brother were Alberto Garcia's niece and nephew and had been adopted by the couple, according to The Associated Press.

Authorities said they believe the Garcias and their three biological children were already south of the border when Carla Garcia called her sister on Sunday, advising her to go check on the family home, the AP reported. Investigators said they believe the family fled in a white 2007 Ford Expedition.

Investigators said they want to check on the welfare of the Garcias' two biological children, 5-year-old Crystal Garcia and 4-year-old Alberto Garcia Jr., and 10-year-old Carlos Sobalvarro Jr., Carla's son from a previous marriage.

Sobalvarro Jr.'s father, also named Carlos Sobalvarro, said he is concerned about his son's safety.

"I feel he's in danger. ... They have really short tempers," he told KBAK, speaking of the Garcias. "I just hope he gets home safe."

Sobalvarro told the Californian that he argued with Alberto Garcia over the court-ordered $1,200 monthly child support for his son, Carlos, which Sobalvarro said he could not afford. He said Carla Garcia threatened him, saying her husband "is capable of killing" him.

Neighbors provide a different portrait of Alberto, an unemployed mechanic, and Carla, a housekeeper, saying they were "caring and loving" parents to their adopted and biological children.

"I never saw them treat those children [the adopted children] differently from the way they treated their own," Greg Reafsnyder, a next-door neighbor of the Garcias, told the Californian.

"Every once in a while, the little boy would come outside, and I'd talk to him," Reafsnyder told KBAK. "The little girl stayed inside a lot. She was well taken care of, in my opinion."

He said the couple recently took all five children to the Magic Mountain amusement park.

I'd bet money that these people are or were at one time all illegal immigrants. Living on the dole of California. And of course, good old Mexico protects and harbors such people when they do something like this in the United States.

"Hell is for Children" That's because abusers don't commit their acts of violence in public!

Hint #1 Mr. Neighbor....little boy would only come out once in a while.....little girl was mostly always inside.

This whole story smacks of a couple who took these kids in to get some kind of public funds to take care of them. Collect scads of money under the guise of taking care of them but really spending the money on themselves. I'd bet that's where the money came from to go to Magic Mountain. I've seen this same thing happen more than a few times. Let's see if Mexico does anything about it and whether they'll ever be prosecuted.
