The Battle for San Bernardino

By Virtual Chicano
5MAY06

Anti-immigrant racists have forced a vote by the San Bernardino city
council which would make renting to the undocumented a crime and slap a
$1,000.00 fine on landlords, who rent to the undocumented, allow the
police to impound vehicles that have an undocumented passenger as well as
driver, ban day labor centers, force city business to be conducted in
English only and deny permits, contracts and grants to businesses that
hire undocumented workers.

This is perhaps the most vicious and mean spirited anti-immigrant
proposal that any American city has ever had to deal with in modern times.

The City of San Bernardino now has until the 17th of this month to vote
on the measure, without amendments, but if they reject it, however, it
will go before the voters.

National alliance for Human Rights founder and UC Riverside college
professor, Dr. Armando Navarro said "San Bernardino is going to become
critical; this could spread." Calling it a racist directive at the
immigrant community , Dr. Navarro has been at the forefront of immigrant
rights movements in California.

So far, three of the seven city council members have said they will
support the proposal while the city attorney James F. Penman certain
provisions could be successfully challenged in court. Mayor Patrick J.
Morris said he would not take a position pending an economic analysis.

No doubt the mayor understands the purchasing power of 100,000 Latino
residents. But do the voters? These are the same voters who elected
Judith Valles, a Latina, to two terms as mayor immediately preceding Mayor
Morris.
Should the city council reject the proposal, the voters will then have
the opportunity to decide the outcome within 135 days.

This initiative is divisive and racist in nature, said Dr. Navarro,
We are going to mobilize and do everything we can to defeat it.
