Police: 4 dead, 4 wounded in Dallas area shootings

DALLAS - An ex-Mesquite ISD teacher and former Mavs ManiAACs dancer is accused of a multi-city murder spree overnight that left four people dead and four more wounded.

The victim's family members said 44-year-old Erbie Bowser opened fire at his girlfriend's home in the 7100 block of Long Canyon Trail in southwest Dallas around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He shot and killed his girlfriend, 43-year-old Toya Smith, and her daughter, 17-year-old Tasmia Allen. Smith's 14-year-old son, Storm Malone, and a 17-year-old family friend were also shot. Their conditions are unknown.

Smith's mother had been on the phone with her just before the shooting. When she couldn't reach her again later she got worried and drove to the house. She called 911 after discovering the crime scene.

Dallas police asked officers in DeSoto to check on a house where they believed the suspect might be. And when officers arrived at the home in the 100 block of Galleria Drive they found four more gunshot victims.

The DeSoto victims have not yet been identified, but police said two adults were killed and a 13-year-old and 11-year-old were wounded. Their conditions are unknown.

Neighbors said Bowser's ex-wife lived in the home with her two sons. Her adult daughter was visiting Wednesday night with her 3-year-old child. They saw that child unharmed being taken away by Child Protective Services.

Bowser was arrested at the scene without incident.

Neighbors said they heard a loud bang or possibly an explosion at the home. Federal agents were called in to investigate the use of an explosive device.

Smith's family members said her relationship with the suspect was sometimes violent. They said they had been trying for years to get her to leave him, but they never suspected anything this tragic would happen.

Family members in DeSoto shared a similar story about a tumultuous relationship.
Bowser appeared on FOX 4 as a member of the 2002 Mavs ManiAACs squad. A spokeswoman for the team confirmed he was with the squad until 2009.

The Mesquite Independent School District confirmed he worked for the district from 2001 to 2010. He was a special education teacher at Mesquite Academy, Berry Middle School and West Mesquite High School, where he also coached football.

Smith's family said he has a military background.

Both Dallas and DeSoto police departments, as well as the FBI and ATF, are now investigating the case.
