Police Arrest Veterans At Vietnam War Memorial

Police arrested anti-war veterans and other protesters at the Vietnam war memorial in New York City late Monday night after they refused to vacate the area after the 10 p.m. curfew. Some of the individuals arrested were Vietnam veterans. I always thought curfews were for children.
Veterans for Peace and other anti-war protesters met at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza in NYC on Monday night for the 12th anniversary of the “invasion and occupation of Afghanistan” and honor the fallen until morning. The Park Service rejected the group’s application to hold their demonstration at the war memorial, but they went ahead anyway.
The NYPD issued several warnings, commanding the veterans and other protesters to leave the area or they would be arrested.

The video shows the arrests. Demonstrators can be heard singing chants of “whose side are you on?” There was even one person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask. If this protest had happened on Wall Street, I imagine this would have had a different ending.

Police Arrest Vietnam Veterans at NYC Memorial

Veterans of the Vietnam War were arrested earlier tonight at the New York City memorial after staying on the premises past the curfew time of 10 p.m. Police gave multiple warnings as veterans continued to read from a list of names. Video from the event shows that not only veterans were loaded into the paddy wagon, but also younger participants in the vigil as well.

The gathering took place in part to protest the twelfth anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. A similar protest and set of arrests occurred last year at the memorial. In the video embedded below, a veteran tells police that they are there to bring awareness to the “immense atrocities” committed in Vietnam, and that “some of you are so much younger, and history has been denied you, so you just need to know why we are here.”



Other spectators recorded the arrests as well. It is not yet known exactly how many people were arrested at the site.
