LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (TheBlaze/AP) — A crowd has gathered in “protest” at the scene of the shooting of a suspect by Little Rock police.
The shooting happened at about 11:30 a.m. after a man fled on foot after being pulled over in an allegedly stolen SUV. Little Rock police say a physical altercation developed when an officer caught up to the suspect and the officer killed the man with at least one gunshot.
Police spokesman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said a weapon was recovered on the suspect.
The vehicle was stopped on 12th Street, several blocks south of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. About 200 people were gathered at the site by about 3 p.m.
There has been a noticeable spike in racial tension in the aftermath of the verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial.
“Several people in the crowd referenced the Trayvon Martin incident, in which the 17-year-old boy was shot following an altercation with neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman last year. Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder on Saturday,” The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports.
The Democrat-Gazette reports people in the crowd also made references to 15-year-old Bobby Moore, a black teen who was killed by an officer in 2012.
Here’s the latest update from the Democrat Gazette, posted at 3:30 p.m. CT:
Little Rock police officials have instructed officers to begin leaving the scene of the shooting.
Police vehicles have lined the block from Washington to Adams streets to control the crowd and investigate the scene.
Around 150 protesters are still on gathered at a nearby Hess gas station. Several individuals who are not police officers have been attempting to calm and disperse the crowd.
