Poll: Americans Have Just About Had It With Government
Poll: Americans Have Just About Had It With Government
January 23, 2014 by Sam Rolley
More Americans are unhappy with the Nation’s system of government and its inefficiency than at any other time in more than a decade.
Gallup found that 65 percent of Americans are unsatisfied with the government in its annual “Mood of the Nation” poll, up from just 23 percent when Americans were feeling unified and patriotic in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks.
The poll, which comes out just a week prior to the President’s State of the Union address, indicates that the government’s size and power are the things Americans dislike the most about the Nation’s leadership. Sixty-six percent of respondents to the poll said government should be smaller and less powerful in the United States.
“These views potentially hamper President Barack Obama’s ability to propose large-scale government solutions in his State of the Union speech next week,” Gallup reported. “However, this problem is not a new one for the president.”
Since Obama set foot in the Oval Office, Gallup has recorded a steady increase in American dissatisfaction with government.
While the polling agency said that Republicans and independents make up the biggest portion of Americans dissatisfied with government, it noted that “even a slight majority of those in his own party are generally dissatisfied with how government is working.”
“Democrats’ satisfaction might have been much higher today, with a Democrat in the White House, if not for the twin problems of the economy and partisan gridlock that have tarnished the government’s image among both parties,” Gallup reported.
“Satisfaction among Republicans, which has directly correlated with the party of the president in office, continues at its depressed level, with this year’s reading tying the record low from 2013.”
