Poll: Cruz leads Trump by 15 percent in Texas

Sen. Ted Cruz is leading Donald Trump by 15 percentage points in his home state, according to a Monmouth University poll out Thursday.

Cruz has the support of 38 percent of likely GOP primary voters, Trump has 23 percent and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has 21 percent. Rounding out the Republican presidential field, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has 6 percent and Ohio Gov. John Kasich has 5 percent.


On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has more than double the support of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, 64 percent to 30 percent. Clinton leads with nearly all demographics, including African-Americans (81 percent to 8 percent), Latinos (68 percent to 32 percent) and whites (54 percent to 40 percent).

Clinton also leads Sanders among women, 75 percent to 19 percent, and among men, 50 percent to 45 percent.


She even leads among all age groups, including those under 50, a group Sanders often leads with (52 percent to his 42 percent). Clinton also has the lead with those over 50, 75 percent to 20 percent.

The poll was conducted Feb. 22-24 via cellphone and landlines. There were 456 likely GOP primary voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 percentage points. There were 304 likely Democratic primary voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points.
