President Obama's pick for the CIA's second-in-command once held erotica nights at her Baltimore bookstore

President Obama's nomination to be deputy director of the CIA was once the hostess of erotic literature readings at a Baltimore bookstore.

Avril Haines, who is set to replace outgoing deputy director Michael Morell, opened and co-owned Adrians's Book Cafe two decades ago after dropping out of a graduate program in physics at Johns Hopkins University, The Daily Beast reports. She named the cafe after Haines' mother, artist Adrian Rappin.

It was there, in a candle-lit room on the second story, that Haines held monthly readings of erotic literature to a crowd of people 'trying to have sex without having sex' - in her own words - according to a 1995 Baltimore Sun article.

Lute, senior director for Afghanistan and Pakistan; Jeff Eggers, director for Afghanistan and Central Region; David Holmes, director for Afghanistan; National Security Adviser Tom Donilon; Haines; and Deputy National Security Advisor Denis McDonough

'Erotica has become more prevalent because people are trying to have sex without having sex,' she told the Sun. 'Others are trying to find new fantasies to make their monogamous relationships more satisfying.
'What the erotic offers is spontaneity, twists and turns. And it affects everyone.'
Haines wasn't the initiator of the steamy evening readings. She told the Sun that a customer came to her with the idea.

'We were terrified who might show up,' she told the newspaper. 'We thought it would be a bunch of dirty old men. And a lot of our friends gave us a hard time. They said, "You just want a mass orgy in your bookstore."'

But the events proved successful, with singles paying $17 and couples paying $30 to attend.

So the second-floor curtains were drawn, the candles were lit, and the readings went on.

CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell is resigning and will be replaced by White House lawyer Avril D. Haines.

EXCERPT FROM A ROMANCE NOVEL HAINES READ ALOUD AT HER STORE

"The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty," by Anne Rice:

'In the topmost bedchamber of the house he found her. He had stepped over sleeping chambermaids and valets, and, breathing the dust and damp of the place, he finally stood in the door of her sanctuary.

Her flaxen hair lay long and straight over the deep green velvet of her bed, and her dress in loose folds revealed the rounded breasts and limbs of a young woman...

Her face was perfect to him, and her embroidered gown had fallen deep into the crease between her legs so that he could see he shape of her sex beneath it.

He drew out his sword, with which he had cut back all the vines outside, and gently slipping the blade between her breasts, let it rip easily through the old fabric.'

News of Haines' past with the bookstore has little relevance to her credentials for the job as deputy director of the CIA.

She is currently deputy assistant to the president and legal adviser to the National Security Council and she has also chaired a legal committee that reviews the CIA's most sensitive activities.
But for an agency that was recently embarrassed by the resignation of its director, David Petraeus, over his affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, Haines' bookstore readings start to appear more pertinent.

Erotica: Obama’s New Deputy CIA Director Has No CIA Experience But Reads Erotic Fiction Out Loud

    By Clash Daily / 13 June 2013 / 26 Comments

So, when your Deputy CIA Director steps down in the middle of a massive scandal, who do you suppose would be a good person to appoint. How about a lawyer with no intelligence experience who used to read aloud at “erotica nights” at her local bookstore. Yeah, that about sums up what Obama just did.
    from Newsweek:
The former host of “Erotica Night” at a Baltimore bookstore will be the first-ever female No. 2 official at the CIA.

On Wednesday, Barack Obama nominated Avril Danica Haines to be the deputy director of the CIA, replacing Michael Morell, who twice served as acting director of the agency but took much of the blame for editing the highly controversial talking points around the 2012 attack on the consulate in Benghazi. As a lawyer in the White House Counsel’s office, Haines oversaw the approval process for the CIA’s covert actions, acting as a vital link between the CIA and the president.

But 20 years ago, Haines opened and co-owned Adrian’s Book Café in the Baltimore waterfront neighborhood of Fells Point. She opened Adrian’s after dropping out of a graduate program in physics at Johns Hopkins University. The store featured regular “Erotica Nights.” including dinner and a series of readings by guests of published work or their own prose, according to a 1995 report in the Baltimore Sun; couples could attend for $30, while singles paid $17.

“Erotica has become more prevalent because people are trying to have sex without having sex. Others are trying to find new fantasies to make their monogamous relationships more satisfying,” Haines, then in her 20s, told the Sun. “What the erotic offers is spontaneity, twists and turns. And it affects everyone.” (She also told Baltimore Sun reporter Mary Corey that friends heckled “you just want a mass orgy in your bookstore, while she and her co-owner were initially worried only “dirty old men” would show up.)

Why Obama Chose Woman With No CIA Experience For No. 2 CIA Job...

    Reuters

Avril Haines will be the first woman to be second in command at the CIA, but critics point not to her gender but her lack of CIA experience. Her choice suggests Obama wants a close ally.

    By Jennifer Skalka Tulumello

Plucking from a collection of high-powered female lawyers serving the White House, President Obama has nominated Avril Haines as the next deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Ms. Haines is the first woman to hold the job. She replaces Michael Morell, who announced his retirement after more than three decades in the CIA to spend time with family.

She’s an unexpected pick in that she hasn’t any background with the agency.

In fact, Haines was slated just a couple months ago to move to the State Department as its legal adviser.
