Protesters opposed to President Obama's address to the graduating class of Notre Dame were arrested Friday after they disobeyed rules about staging their demonstration and walked onto the university campus.

Obama is also receiving an honorary law degree on Sunday, a decision that has upset abortion opponents who say the Catholic university is violating its own beliefs by honoring the president.

Protesters were told they could protest all they want in the town of South Bend, Ind., but once they stepped onto Notre Dame property, they would be arrested.

Former presidential candidate Alan Keyes led about 50 people onto the campus. They came across the gate and about 200 yards up the driveway where campus police were waiting. They were peaceful. The police asked the protesters to leave. They refused and were taken into custody. Vans were ready to load them up.

Perhaps the most dramatic moment happened when Father Norman Weslin of Omaha, Neb., a former army colonel and founder of the Lambs of Christ, refused to leave. He was singing and was carried off on a stretcher, not strong enough to march off on his own.

All in all, about 15 people, a group not from the Notre Dame community, were arrested.

Outside of the arrests, the campus was generally quiet. A lot of students say the president's visit has been a constant source of debate about the school's teachings on life.

Both sides have been very civil. However, the activity off campus has caused some anxiety for members of the community who say that raucous protests may detract from the students' graduation day.

Aside from the out-of-towners who are protesting, a group of students has announced it will not attend the commencement and will hold a prayer vigil elsewhere on campus instead.

Interesting, isn't it that the same was not required of the protesters during Tom Tancredo's speech?

I am so glad they are there standing up for what is right. Obama makes me sick with his stance on abortion. Then he has the audacity to say he is a Christian, which is against all that is Christian which is to acknowledge that God is our supreme authority on life, and only HE has the right to make those choices, not man or woman.

This was a huge part of my decision to leave the Church long ago, I was sick to death of the "righteous" DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO!

So who gave Christians the ultimate right to denounce abortion? I don;t believe in abortion, but I DO NOT have the right to play God. As much as I would like to see abortion demolished, what right do I have to take away the freedom from another person? God gave us freewill for a reason. It is UNGODLY to take God out of a decision. If a woman decides to have an abortion, than God will give that soul to a deserving family, while the person that received the abortion will live with guilt for the rest of their life.

I am not in the business of making God's decisions for him. That's why we are given choices. If I were to take away the decision from a mother to have an abortion, than I would be taking away God's choice as to what to do with that soul. I am not God, nor do I DARE to make that decision for Him.

That is the BIGGEST difference between you and me. I choose to let God do what he has to do to make this planet a better place, while the religious tries to change LAW to FIT what they believe, the freewill that God has given us has been taken away by the religious.

    Geez, that's great jshhmr.............

Let's start here. I do not believe souls "recycle". So on the issue of God making the choice, He does, however, with abortion on demand in this nation, this nation has taken away, with laws, ANY personal responsibility of the woman, and man, who conceived that life. There is adoption, and....(drumroll please) there is such a thing as abstinence, which would be a cure for many "unwanted" pregnancies.

We have taken away the sense of morality and shame in these situations by allowing people to take the life of an innocent child, in order to make their lives easier. I know, some will claim it on the basis of rape, incest and such (health problems), but I believe that NONE of us can take that choice from God, we do not have that right.

Let me tell you, I KNOW from experience on this....I had a child at 15, she is now 26, with a son of her own, my grandson and I could not imagine my life without them, glad I did not kill her for my own convenience, otherwise I would now not have her or my grandson.
