    Question about US Battleships

    I just read where Obama has ordered several US Destroyers to the South China sea over this brewing confrontation with China.

    I read on wiki that destroyers were the heaviest class of war ships on the seas now.

    So, all US Battleships have been decommissioned? No more battleships?

    We still have

    a Dozen or so Carriers and a few dozen subs, including boomers.

    Battleships are all mothballed.

    I am from a Navy family. There are now carrier groups. The last time we had a confrontation with China, around the time they were pressuring Taiwan to rejoin them, we had a carrier group over there. They challenged us, and ours moved right in together.

    Seems this is how it is done now. As for classes, that is something my brother knows, but it is to my knowledge that the destroyers and frigates, loaded with weapons are much more agile and more technologically advanced than the battleships were, which they are always in a carrier group (as well as subs, the carrier itself and supply).

    No more battleships in service, but the US does have Aegis missle cruisers.
