Thread: Be ready for some victories, defeats

Today (Friday) is the day that the big provisions come up. The guest worker amnesty will decide this great bill's fate. If it is amended to include an amnesty, the conservative wing of the GOP will kill the bill entirely. If no amnesty is included, some business sell-outs in the GOP may kill the bill. Fox News and CNN said the bill will pass regardless.

The easier parts of the enforcement agenda were included and passed, like one that will allow for the building of a fence along the southwestern part of the US-Mexico border, and some of the lower ranking amendments from the "let them all in" crowd were defeat. Thursday was a great day for us. But again, Friday is the true test.

Friday is when the guest worker amnesty amendement will either be introduced and voted in or out, or maybe killed before in a compromise that will bring an amnesty up for a vote after this bill passes.

Other amendments will include one to bar federal funds to cities that don't report illegal immigrants to federal authorites. That amendment is a coin toss. Also an amendment to end birthright citizenship may be introduced, but is likely to fail, if not if the house, than no-doubt the senate. Expect some things you like, and some you dislike. Some of the amendments you want to pass will fail. But overall, this bill will be worth passing under all circumstances except a flat-out amnesty.

We'll get a bill we here at ALIPAC can be proud of from the house, but the senate is our true test. Let's keep the pressure on!
