Refugee Rights Activist Arrested in NYC; Alleged to Have Thrown Incendiary Device at Police Car

See the story over at Frauds and Crooks! I need to get some numbers posted here at RRW since I am so far behind these days!

Urooj Rahman prepares to throw a Molotov cocktail. Gee I wonder where she learned her bomb making skills. Nice face covering (just saying).

NYC: Lawyers to Be Arraigned Today on Federal Charges after Attack on Police

One of the lawyers charged with hurling Molotov cocktails at a police cruiser is a 32-year-old Princeton educated lawyer and his partner in (alleged) crime is a 31-year-old “human rights” lawyer and activist who worked on refugee issues in Turkey.

Here is a bit of the news from the NY Post:

Accused Molotov cocktail hurler is Ivy League-educated lawyer, community board member

A Ivy League-educated lawyer and member of a Brooklyn community board was among those arrested for hurling a Molotov cocktail at a marked NYPD vehicle amid George Floyd protests, it was revealed Sunday.

Colinford King Mattis at his graduation from NYU law school.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/31/n...-cocktail.html

Colinford Mattis, 32, was allegedly behind the wheel of a tan minivan as his passenger, fellow attorney Urooj Rahman, allegedly hurled the incendiary at an empty NYPD vehicle outside the 88th Precinct station house in Fort Greene early on Saturday.

Mattis, a graduate of Princeton University and New York University law school, is an associate at corporate Manhattan firm Pryor Cashman.
    [….]

Rahman, 31, meanwhile, is also registered as an attorney in New York state, who was admitted to the bar in June 2019 after graduating from Fordham University School of Law. It was not immediately clear on Sunday whether she was affiliated with any law firm.

It’s unclear how she and Mattis know each other.

The Brooklyn residents are federally charged with causing damage by fire and explosives to a police vehicle, during demonstrations over the death of George Floyd.

Thanks to a reader for a tip! I bet there is so much more to be learned about this pair.

Fordham Law School has this glowing write-up for new American Ms. Rahman:

Urooj Rahman ’15 worked with the Refugee Solidarity Network (RSN) and Refugee Rights Turkey (RTT), which, through their legal work, assist and empower refugees fleeing Turkey. Urooj provided direct services to asylum-seekers at the Center for Refugee Rights in Istanbul. As a foreign lawyer in Turkey, she lent her legal assistance mostly to non-Syrians going through the UNHCR refugee status determination procedure. She also served several months in New York with RSN, using her direct service experience to inform her contribution to international advocacy and awareness-raising initiatives.

I’ll try to come back to this story, but after being away, and then due to a storm losing internet service for days, I’ve got a lot of catching up to do!

Their arrests shortly after were a startling turn for the two, who were otherwise role models in their communities. Both children of immigrants, they rose from working-class Brooklyn neighborhoods to win a long list of awards and campus leadership positions. Mattis graduated from Princeton University and New York University Law School, while Rahman went to Fordham University for college and law school.
As one friend put it, they were “NYC kids from impoverished backgrounds who made something of themselves.”

Appeals Court Reverses Bail, Sends Two Alleged Molotov Cocktail-Throwing Lawyers Back to Jail

    JERRY LAMBEJun 6th, 2020, 6:07 pm

Colinford Mattis, 32, and his alleged accomplice, 31-year-old Urooj Rahman.

Two New York-based attorneys accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at New York Police Department vehicles during police brutality protests are headed back to jail after a federal appellate court on Friday evening reversed a lower court’s decision granting them release on bond.

The lawyers, Colinford Mattis, 32, and Urooj Rahman, 31, had been out on bail with electronic monitoring since Monday after each were able to post $250,000 bail set by a magistrate judge in the Eastern District of New York. Federal prosecutors immediately appealed the bail order to the U.S. District Court, but U.S. District Judge Margo K. Brodie upheld the magistrate’s order.

The Government then filed a second appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals For the Second Circuit on Tuesday, seeking an emergency stay of Judge Brodie’s order. In their motion to the Second Circuit, prosecutors argued that Judge Brodie erred in ordering the defendants’ release on bail by failing to fully consider the seriousness of their offense and the risk they pose to the community.

A three-judge panel of judges at the appeals court heard oral arguments on the matter Friday morning. Assistant U.S. Attorney David K. Kessler contended that if the defendants hadn’t been caught, they appeared poised to continue burning additional police vehicles.

“The contents of the defendants’ vehicle – including at least one other fully assembled Molotov cocktail as well as other precursor materials — reflects that the defendants intended to conduct other similar attacks opportunistically thereafter. In addition, the defendants sought to incite others to launch similar attacks and attempted to distribute other Molotov cocktails to other protestors in furtherance of this objective,” Kessler wrote in court documents.

“Moreover, just minutes after committing that dangerous and violent act, they were arrested with another assembled Molotov cocktail as well as other precursor materials that could be used to make additional destructive devices.”

The attorneys for the two lawyer-defendants told the panel that prior to their arrests, both of the accused fire-bombers had lived very stable lives, had never been arrested in the past, and presented no flight risk, according to the New York Law Journal.

The panel agreed with the Government, issuing an order later that day reversing the district court’s decision and ordering both Mattis and Rahman back to jail. In granting the prosecutors’ request for an emergency stay on the bail order, the panel also set forth an expedited schedule for the appeal with the first set of briefs due by June 10.
