Reminder on the 1986 Amnesty Bill (Simpson-Mazzoli)

Just a refresher on the 1986 Simpson-Mazzoli immigration (amnesty) bill excerpted from Newt Gingrich's new book Real Change.

The failure of this bill is why we cannot agree to any form of amnesty:

The Simpson-Mazzoli bill contained three promises:

    1) The government would make a concerted effort to control the borders.

    2) An effective employer verification program would ensure that only legal workers were hired.

    3) One-time amnesty would be granted for people illegally in the United States.

All three promises were broken. The government has made no serious effort to control our borders. It has made no serious effort to develop and implement an effective employer verification program. There are millions more in our country illegally today (an estimated twelve to twenty million) than there were in 1986.

Populist, don't forget also that there were six additional smaller amnesties as well. So much for their "one-time" amnesty promise.

Is Pelosi blocking the SAVE Act? Rep Schuler has been doing an outstanding job gathering backers---but supposedly Pelosi is chastening Dems who will sign on as co-sponsors. Another thread was discussing possible heat on Pelosi for having divided interests. I would say this is the best chance--and it would still have to go to the Senate. But if passed would be harder to repeal.

We need to encourage Dem (and Republican) Reps. who have chosen to co-sponsor the SAVE Act. They need to find some other co-sponsors.

Yup, good point Sippy. Another reason why we have to draw the line now. NO MORE AMNESTIES. We're tired of being lied to.

Capt. Ron: Yes, We had a couple of threads on this, but it appears Pelosi and Baca were or are still scheming to add Baca's massive 5-year visa amnesty scheme to SAVE act if SAVE is brought to the House floor. But the last Numbers e-mail said there is now a small window wherein Pelosi may have backed off this temporarily so we should push the GOP House leadership to get behind SAVE and push it for a vote (through a 'discharge petition' I believe).
