DHS Handling of Undocumented Alien Children

    Executive Summary

The Flores v. Reno Settlement Agreement governs the policy for the treatment of unaccompanied alien children in federal custody. Unaccompanied alien children are minors less than 18 years old who arrive in the United States without a parent or legal guardian and are in the temporary custody of federal authorities because of their immigration status. The Department of Homeland Security is bound by the Flores v. Reno Settlement Agreement, which includes requirements that immigration officials detaining minors provide (1) food and drinking water, (2) medical assistance in the event of emergencies, (3) toilets and sinks, (4) adequate temperature control and ventilation, (5) adequate supervision to protect minors from others, and (6) separation from unrelated adults whenever possible. Customs and Border Protection is one of the Department of Homeland Security’s primary immigration enforcement agencies for handling unaccompanied children. Customs and Border Protection personnel apprehend, process, and detain unaccompanied alien children intercepted along the borders and at ports of entry for attempting to enter the United States illegally. Based on our site visits to 30 Border Patrol stations and ports of entry, select document reviews, and independent observations, we concluded that Customs and Border Protection was in compliance with the general provisions of the Flores v. Reno Settlement Agreement. Although we did not identify any significant
violations of the agreement, we are recommending that the agency (1) evaluate its food-purchasing and contracting methods to ensure efficient use of resources; (2) ensure that detainees are informed of the safety of drinking water provided in hold rooms; (3) determine whether unaccompanied alien children are injured or require medical attention; (4) document medical care provided; (5) ensure that detention facilities maintain sufficient inventories of medical supplies; (6) ensure that toilets and sinks are routinely inspected and work properly; (7) verify that all required personnel complete the mandatory annual refresher Flores v. Reno Settlement Agreement training; and (8 accurately and consistently document required information pertaining to unaccompanied alien children.

Not to sound cold hearted but

If they come across the border it should be that countries problem , not ours

I'm assuming we are talking mainly about mexican or latin American children

Its time our govt got some balls and told mexico and South American countries they are responsible for their foreign nationals that are caught illegally in this country period.

    Mexican teen faces deportation
    By KEVIN CONNOR, Toronto Sun

Daniel Garcia fears he will be murdered by a homophobic mob when he is deported to Mexico today.

The Grade 11 student at a Parkdale high school fled Mexico with his older sister three years after her lesbian lover was murdered in front of him for being gay.

His sister was deported on Monday.

On Friday, about 100 supporters gathered at the federal court on Queen St. to protest the deportation of the 17-year-old.

A last-ditch effort to stay the deportation has failed, Daniel’s lawyer Dan Kingwell said.

The judge ruled there was no new evidence to allow Daniel to stay and losing his school year was not reason enough, he said.

“Daniel filled out his application to stay his removal on incorrect advice, four of the five pieces of evidence he submitted were rejected because of incorrect dates,â€

[quote="swatchick"] Daniel has many friends, said Pursodman Ramachandran, a classmate for three years. “Daniel came to Canada to find safety, he should not be deported away for his friends, his school or his community.â€

I feel sorry for them but am a logical person. Yah there situation sucks as does much of the worlds. But we cannot change the world, people have to change themselves. So what do I do, support illegal children and those with a rough time (I had a rough life myself) or do I support my own children and citizens around me? I'd rather do what I can to help those legal citizens around be have a chance at a better future, offer them a hand up as we have people who are citizens all around us with problems.

So yah, they have a sad storry and I feel sorry for them. Still the way to fix the issue isn't to run away to another country but take a stand in your own country to make things better. Every major first world country today was founded on bloodshed. The US, China, Japan, Europe and other western countries, even Australia in ways (sorry dunno much Aussie history though). Its through that breaking point that a country betters itself and it can't do that with people who just run away.

In the end we have enough of our own problems to take on Mexico's problem or the problems of the world. Their destiny is in their hands, not ours.

What bs. A mob is ready to kill them for being gay. LOL....in Mexico? No way. Mexicans, as a culture are not anti gay. There may be some individuals who are anti gay, but that is true in the USA too. So there is no danger of this person being deported...just a fabricated story to try to stay here.

There are people in the US ready to kill a person because they are gay. However we have laws and such that make its punishment more severe (hate laws). Maybe instead they should focus on adding laws and fixing their own country.
