Romney Writes Off Hispanic Voters In Selecting Paul Ryan for Ticket
By Dan Moffett, About.com Guide
August 11, 2012
Choosing Paul Ryan for his running mate means that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is all but giving up on the Hispanic vote in November.
Ryan, the seven-term congressman from Wisconsin, has built a hard-line record on immigration issues and voted against the DREAM Act. Romney passed over several other candidates with more moderate immigration records, most notably Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who has urged the party to soften its stands on immigration matters.
Rubio tried to put together a Republican version of the DREAM Act earlier this year and at least had something to offer Hispanic voters.
"Throughout his life, Mitt Romney has made great decisions, and choosing Paul Ryan as his running mate is a truly inspired choice," a diplomatic Rubio said of the Ryan choice. "I got to know Paul during my Senate campaign when he endorsed me early on when I was still considered a long shot. Paul Ryan is a courageous reformer who understands our nation's challenges, has proposed bold policy solutions to solve them, and has shown the courage to stand up to President Obama and other Washington politicians trying to tear him down.
"The Romney-Ryan ticket is going to win in November because it offers the American people visionary leadership to recapture the free enterprise spirit that has empowered countless Americans to build businesses from scratch and live the American dream."
In the 2008 election, President Obama won 67% of the Hispanic vote against John McCain. In July, an NBC-Wall Street Journal-Telemundo poll found Obama is the choice of 67% of Hispanics this time around. Apparently Romney believes there is no changing that.

Ryan was a very good choice. Rubio and Jindal are both constitutionally ineligible. Romney knew choosing either of these two would have put him in a no win situation.

I think Ryan can actually help Romney pull more than 33% of the Hispanic vote. By preaching fiscal conservatism. Ryan can clearly demonstrate how the Obama agenda will kill this country economically while Romney will establish policies friendly to small business, economic growth, and employment expansion. He can explain what must be done to save Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid as well as saving us from careening off a financial cliff because of unsustainable debt. And with prompting from folks like us he can make it clear how illegal immigration factors into every one of those fiscal concerns. These are issues that should be important to Hispanics, as they should be to anyone individual or group. As of June 1 Hispanic unemployment was 11% compared to the national unemployment rate of 8.2%, so they are being disproportionately affected by Obama's policies. Hispanic businesses are impacted by Obama's policies as well, and Hispanics have just as much to fear with regard to their future and the future of their children if current trends continue unabated.
Ryan apparently has an excellent record of being able to convince voters that what he is advocating is in the best interest of every one. He has won election several times in a heavily Democrat district, including one that voted for Obama in 2008 but still re-elected Ryan by a significant margin. If he can win over Democrats in Wisconsin he can win over Hispanics everywhere."We have met the enemy, and they is us." - POGO

This is getting truely commical. Romney made no choice, he takes orders from the GOP. Romney is a yes man and salesman and not very good at that. It will help however if they let Ryan do the talking and keep Romney's mouth shut.

By choosing Ryan , Romney made a great choice, he secured the Conservative vote, Tea party vote as well as the Catholic vote which by the way there are tons of Hispanics who are Catholic. As for the illegal alien vote, they should not be voting anyway! Time for us to get our country back from the ILLEGALS FIRST REGIME!!!!!

Is Romney taking a cue from one of his predecessors, will he let his VP do the leading in decisons made? Will he shut the VP down to being a lap dog? Cabinet members (and advisors) have influence in quite large degrees also. Who are they to be - unfortunately we never get that info until they win. I knew the minute Obama said Napolitano that our issue on illegal immigration would not get heard . Sec'y of State, HHS and Att'y General are as or more important to policy in action than VP by old tradition. Still listening for new info.
