It's time to fix our broken immigration system. Tomorrow night, President Obama will address the nation on new commonsense steps he's taking to fix as much of it as he can. Tune in tomorrow at 8pm ET on http://whitehouse.gov/Immigration-Action #ImmigrationAction
The announcement will be made the night before the President is scheduled to travel to Del Sol High School in Las Vegas, where he first set forth his principles for comprehensive immigration reform one year ago.
The President is expected to act through an executive order, affecting nearly five million undocumented immigrants, by preventing deportations and supplying work authorizations, a situation Republicans are not happy about.
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) voiced his opposition to the executive action, saying:“‘The audacity of this President to think he can completely destroy the Rule of Law with the stroke of a pen is unfathomable to me,’ King said. ‘It is unconstitutional, it is cynical, and it violates the will of the American people. Our Republic will not stand if we tolerate a President who is set upon the complete destruction of the Rule of Law.'”This would not be the first executive action dealing with undocumented immigrants. Republicans Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush granted amnesty to family members of immigrants who were not protected by the overhaul of the 1986 immigration policy.
But, David Frum of The Atlantic argues that executive actions by Reagan and Bush should not serve as precedent for any amnesty by Obama:“Reagan and Bush acted in conjunction with Congress and in furtherance of a congressional purpose.” While President Obama “would follow not an act of Congress but a prior executive action of his own: his suspension of enforcement against so-called Dreamers in June 2012.”Frum adds:
“It is intended to overpower and overmaster a recalcitrant Congress. Two presidents of two different parties have repeatedly called upon Congress to pass a second large amnesty. Congress has repeatedly declined.”The news of Obama’s announcement follows an open letter, penned by Democratic leaders, urging their support for executive action on immigration. However, an NBC/Wall St Journal poll released today found that only 38% of the American population feels the same way.
As expected, reactions toward the President’s use of executive action vary on social media. Some are happy:
