Ryan: Trump’s Muslim Immigration Ban ‘Not What This Party Stands For'
Ryan: Trump’s Muslim Immigration Ban ‘Not What This Party Stands For'
By Allegra Kirkland Published December 8, 2015, 10:18 AM EST
House Speaker Paul Ryan broke from his habit of avoiding comment on the 2016 presidential race to strongly condemn Donald Trump’s call for a ban on Muslim immigration to the US during Tuesday’s House GOP press conference.
“What was proposed yesterday is not what this party stands for and more importantly it's not what this country stands for," Ryan said.
The speaker said he was making an “exception” by directly responding to Trump’s statement, which he said was “not conservatism.”
“Freedom of religion is a fundamental Constitutional principle,” he said. “It is a founding principle of this country.”
Ryan pointed out that many Muslim-Americans have served in the armed forces and the U.S. government, adding that some of our “best and biggest allies in the fight against radical Islamic terror are Muslims, the vast, vast majority of whom are peaceful.”
His comments were made during a press conference announcing Republican efforts to “defeat” the threat of terrorist groups like the Islamic State, such as a GOP-led effort to pause the U.S. program accepting Syrian refugees and strengthen the visa waiver program.
Asked by a reporter if Trump’s remarks would hurt the party’s reputation, Ryan replied that he was “not concerned about lasting damage to the party.”
Instead, he said he was “concerned about commitment to conservative principles.”

Paul Ryan Threatens To Defund Entire Refugee Program If Obama Continues Bringing In Potentially Dangerous Syrian Refugees
November 28, 2015 •By laura •In Politics
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is threatening to defund the Syrian Refugee Program in the United States unless Obama and his administration take more security measures. There have already been at least two instances where terrorists have gained illegal entrance through the immigration of the Syrian Refugee Program. Passports and other forms of identification are easily forged and obtained in Middle Eastern countries.
As many as 27 State Governors have vowed to not allow any Syrian refugees come into their states until further security precautions are taken. Obama quickly tried to calm the fears but no one has backed down. In fact, with Ryan’s new announcement, he is standing more resolute than before.
Obama has vowed to veto any bill from Congress that will demand more scrutiny of Syrian refugees before they are allowed in. But it already has a veto proof majority. Obama’s tactics of skirting the law are well known. Ryan has said that defunding the measure is one option but they will be discussing others as well. They will want to make sure that Obama has no way around it unless he breaks the law and the Constitution. He is known for always getting his way and will do so at any cost.
One of the responsibilities of the President is to defend this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. By knowingly allowing possible terrorists into this country, he is not fulfilling that duty and should be grounds for impeachment. What else does he need to do and how far must he go before our elected officials do something about Obama and reign him in?
In March of 2008 Obama said and I quote “I will stand with the Muslims if the political winds shift in an ugly direction.” It sounds like that is exactly what he is doing by resisting any efforts for extra security measures before allowing more Syrian refugees into the United States. Although we have had this program for many years, the threat of terrorism has never been higher than recently. The further loss of innocent lives around the globe should be prevented as much as possible. Everyone should be questioning why the President is not willing to do that. I think it has been clear for some time that Obama’s allegiance is not to the American people and their safety. It is for his personal beliefs. There seems to be no other explanation.
