As part of its mission to reduce poverty and discrimination and improve life opportunities for Hispanics, NCLR believes that increased civic engagement is an essential part of any community empowerment strategy. To that end, the organization has amplified its advocacy activities, adding a state and local dimension to NCLR’s policy analysis and advocacy work, while seeking to strengthen the nonpartisan foundation for increased Latino participation in the political process. The separate but related initiatives that compose this work are the Field Advocacy Project (FAP) and the Latino Empowerment and Advocacy Project (LEAP).

Emerging Latino Communities Initiative
The Emerging Latino Communities Initiative (ELC) is a multi-facetted organization development program that seeks to establish organizational infrastructure in communities that have recently seen a dramatic increase in the Latino population. Primarily, ELC focuses in areas of the country where there is currently little Latino or for Latino sub-group organizational infrastructure. Geographic target areas are the Southeast, Northwest, and Midwest, although exceptions are made.
Field Advocacy Project
NCLR’s public policy expertise at the federal level, which includes a number of key issues also significant at the state level, has provided fertile ground for collaboration with state and local groups engaged in education, health, economic mobility, civil rights, and immigration issues, among others. Through its Field Advocacy Project, NCLR hopes to create greater synergy among advocates working at the local, state, and federal levels, to achieve policy reform in areas of interest to the nation's Latino community.

I had always thought that international driver's licenses were available throughout the world. Some countries don't recognize them but I think most do.

If they need a drivers license they should be able to get one in their home country that would list their true address."Men of low degree are vanity, Men of high degree are a lie. " David

The excerpt below from that site is the most outrageous. How do they have "voting rights".
Voting Rights
The right to vote is a fundamental and basic right guaranteed to all U.S. citizens by the Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Every voter has the right to cast an informed and effective vote. This right is extended to all people, including those for whom English is not their first language

The part that gets me is the Government has no right to ask them for more then a Drivers License and they don't need to prove they are legal. Bull Crap. I think we need guards at the polling booths.

This is the area where we should be fighting hard. These groups are gearing up to get these people to voting booths -- and SOMEONE in our government, our legal system, has got to get this stopped. It will completely destroy our election. No one will know the true outcome -- it would be utter chaos. Will make Florida and the Bush vote debacle look like kindergarten play.
LEGAL hispanic citizens have probably been here for years and are probably already registered to vote. They didn't need LaRaza then and they don't need them now -- they CAN speak English and they have assimilated as Americans -- not "hispanic Americans" -- a special group that demands special priviledges and assistance.
I think THIS is one issue where we need to write our reps NOW so they know we are aware of it and watching . . . They've got time now to prepare, and to make sure it doesn't happen.
I think this is one area where citizens need to take it upon themselves to guard the polls.
Gotta love this bit, too -- talk about creating a "disadvantaged" class:
Compared to some of our venerable counterparts in the civil rights and advocacy community, we are a relatively young institution, representing Latinos, an historically disadvantaged and oft-misunderstood ethnic minority.
Try being WHITE -- that's the REAL disadvantaged group in this country.
My daughter attends a private college where she has to pay most of the full tuition. Several of her minority friends are there are free ride scholarships, from everything to violin to sports, to academic grants based on their various ethnicities. WE have to save and scrimp and take out multiple loans, while these kids go free .... believe me, there is no disadvantage that they don't create FOR THEMSELVES.

We need to have ICE and border patrol at each election site. Even if you just buy the hat or jacket and stand around, it may just stop some of them. Maybe?
Geez, if we let this happen we are in deep doo doo.
Rights? Seems everyone has rights except Americans. Keep on the phones, faxes and emails. We have to stop this now.I'd rather die living then live dying!

An international driver's license is only valid for one year and once immigrating here with a valid SS#, etc., you can apply for a proper DL. So one can drive here in the U.S. using the IDL.
Thanks for the link because me being new did not know what the NCLR was. I was about to google it.
