E-Verify's shortcomings in keeping illegal aliens out of U.S. jobs are reasons to strengthen the online federal system, not write it off.

A study done for the Department of Homeland Security found E-Verify in 2008 erroneously green-lighted illegals about 54 percent of the time. That failing is mainly due to the online federal system's inability to detect illegals' pernicious, pervasive identity fraud.

But instead of sensibly praising the study for highlighting what's needed to improve E-Verify and supporting that effort, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. -- who's drafting Democrats' upcoming immigration "reform" legislation -- says it proves E-Verify's ineffectiveness.

Yet the study also found E-Verify correctly cleared legal workers 93 percent of the time and is "much more effective" at catching illegals than the eligibility paperwork most employers use.

Sen. Schumer seems uninterested in bolstering E-Verify's capability to catch illegals' identity fraud. But what else to expect from one of illegals' best friends -- and therefore no friend of American workers -- on Capitol Hill?

If E-Verify is not strengthened, American workers will definitely know who Schumer and his ilk actually are representing -- and it won't be them!

Schumer is the one politician I most think of as down on his knees in front of the illegal crowd---doing you know what.
