Record Support for Arizona-Style Immigration Enforcement Law

POLL: Record Support for Arizona-Style Immigration Enforcement Laws
By John Hill on August 3, 2011 in News

At a time when the Department of Justice is following the lead of fringe groups like the ACLU and MALDEF, in suing Arizona and Alabama for their common sense immigration enforcement laws, a new poll shows record support for these approaches by the American people.

According to a new Rasmussen poll, a whopping 75% of Americans support AZ-style penalties vs. employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens, and 65% say police should automatically check immigration status during traffic stops – both record highs and hallmarks of Arizona laws which the Obama Administration has tried to stop. In addition, 67% say a state should be able to enforce immigration laws when the Feds have failed. (see chart below)

American People Stand With Arizona-Style Laws
    Enforcement Provision.......................... Support... Oppose
Strict sanctions on employers who hire illegal aliens 75% 16%.

Support state laws to enforce immigration law when Feds fail to act 67% 22%

Automatic immigration checks by police during traffic stops 65% 26%

Shut down companies who knowingly/repeatedly hire illegals 61% 21%

Strict sanctions on landlords who rent to illegal aliens 59% 24%
Source: Rasmussen Reports Poll: National Survey of 1,000 Likely Voters, July 14-15, 2011

These are big numbers. And they demonstrate why Arizona-style enforcement laws such as S.B. 1070, Alabama’s S.B. 56 and Georgia’s S.B. 87 must be models for every state nationwide.

America is broke. Yet the staggering cost of illegal aliens to American taxpayers – $113 billion annually – has been completely ignored in the recent debt ceiling debate. But those costs are felt every day by people across this nation – in the sustained unemployment, as jobs for Americans have evaporated, while jobs for illegals have gained during the recession. And in the hundreds of hospitals closing because of the overhwhelming cost of unpaid bills by illegal aliens – $1.25 billion a year in California alone. And in the brazen hiring of illegals in well-paying jobs by unscrupulous employers, while little or nothing is done by the Feds to stop it. And in the bankrupting of social services from coast to coast, as 71% of illegal aliens collect at least one type of welfare, and brazenly break the law to obtain WIC and food stamps – again, with no Federal actions to stop it.

ENOUGH. the Federal government has failed miserably to enforce our immigration laws. It is up to the states to uphold the rule of law. And the American People overwhelmingly back these actions. This is why Stand With Arizona and our activists have worked so hard this year to pass laws in GA, IN, AL, TX, SC and elsewhere. And it is why this fall SWA will be ramping up our efforts in 22 states across America to pass Arizona-style enforcement laws against illegals and employers who hire them.

And we will also be making sure that elected officials who oppose the will of the people on these issues will be out of a job in 2012.

    About John Hill
John Hill is the Executive Director of Stand With Arizona, the nation's second largest organization opposing illegal immigration and amnesty. SWA's 240,000 members have been instrumental in passing legislation in states and counties around the U.S., and blocking the DREAM Act in 2010.
