Activists protest immigration bill collapse

Activists from more than a dozen South Florida immigrant advocacy agencies gathered at the Florida Immigrant Coalition Friday morning to denounce the collapse on the Senate floor of the controversial immigration bill.

''Today is a very sad day for America and for millions of immigrants who have been waiting to come out of the shadows and be free,'' said Marleine Bastien, executive director of Haitian Women of Miami.

Bastien started getting calls Thursday night from members of the Haitian community as they watched C-SPAN coverage of the debate on the 627-page bill.

''People were crying,'' she said. 'They wanted to know, `When will we be given a chance to live in peace? It's not like this is about us coming in. We're already here. We have businesses. We have homes.' ''

Members of Students Working for Equal Rights, the Service Employees International Union and We Count! spoke about the consequences the death of the bill will have on the mostly Hispanic immigrant communities of South Florida.

''I'm devastated,'' said Maria Rodriguez of Florida Immigrant Coalition. ``It was a very frayed, delicate lifeline for immigrants here, but it was a lifeline. But I have hope they'll pick it up again.''

How about emailing the author and protesting the use of 'immigrant' instead of the factual 'illegal immigrant'?

THEY AREN'T IMMIGRANTS! THEY ARE ILLEGALS!

Illegal aliens.

Trespassers of our national borders.

Why can't these criminals understand that there will always be consequences for criminal actions?

(Boy, that 'shadow' reference is really getting the air play now.)

Why is it that the media never challenges statements like this by asking, "How did you come by these things?" or "At whose expense did you aquire these things?" Because the answer is obvious, they aquire these things due to the surpluses in this country and they do so at the expense of those who obey the rules and come in legally.
