    Senate-Passed Immigration-Enforcement Legislation

Ask House Speaker, State Representatives to Support Senate-Passed Immigration-Enforcement Legislation

Immigration-enforcement legislation in the Ky. legislature faces a Senate-House standoff. The Senate will not pass HB 3, a mandatory E-Verify bill for state and local governments and their contractors, while the House will not pass SB 6, an Arizona-style illegal presence bill.

There are only a few weeks of session left, so we are asking that you engage in another round of calling and faxing for SB 6. A separate alert was sent for HB 3.

SB 6 is stuck in the Kentucky House Local Government Committee because House Speaker Greg Stumbo, in conjunction with Democrats on the committee, will not move the bill. Their excuse is that the bill is too expensive.

Please call, email and fax Speaker Stumbo to ask him to stop blocking SB 6.

Also, please call and email Committee Chairman Steve Riggs, and as many of the other committee members as possible, to say that the benefits of the bill far outweigh the costs, and that you expect passage of SB 6.

    Talking points are included below.

    Talking Points

Please stop blocking passage of SB 6. I support HB 3 but more is needed to crack down on illegal immigration and free up jobs for unemployed Kentuckians, especially since HB 3 does not apply to all employers.

You claim the bill is too expensive but let me be clear. The benefits of the bill far outweigh the costs. Illegal immigration costs the Commonwealth of Kentucky over $300 million per year. The cost of enforcing SB 6 is only a fraction of that amount.

I think the fiscal analysis done for the bill is wrong. It wrongly assumes a high percentage of illegal aliens would be taken into custody when in fact SB 6 will spur illegal aliens to leave the Commonwealth on their own. And since a much smaller amount will need to be detained, the rest of the projected costs are grossly overstated.

We need SB 6 NOW to put Kentuckians back to work. Under the current unemployment rate of 10.3, over 214,000 of us are out of work while at least 50,000 illegal aliens have Kentucky jobs. Unemployed citizens should not have to compete with illegal aliens for jobs.

The deterrents against unlawful presence in SB 6 will free up jobs for struggling Kentuckians. And since the bill explicitly states that it must be implemented in a manner that protects the civil rights of all persons, these benefits will not accrue at the cost of undermining the Constitutions 4th Amendment protections.

You need to do more to protect working men and women in Kentucky. Please stop blocking SB 6.
